This is a very broad question and the answer would be dependent on whether the sand was going into a new tank or a tank that has been running past the cycle start up, lets say for a year or more. Can you be a little more specific about the application or why you are asking? |

You can see life in the live sand within the 1st couple weeks if Live rock or something to seed the sand is in the tank as well. It really depends to if the live rock has good life as well.. I would say about 2 weeks - 6 months...

I see critters pretty quickly but it takes longer for the denitrifying bacteria to kick in. I wouldn't count on the theoretically "live" sand. IMO there is little to no life left in the bagged stuff even if it was there to begin with. Regardless of what you do, it is going to take time. Like Vicki's range. It will begin in a couple of weeks but the LR seeds it so it becomes more and more live over time.
