Re: My New Nano 14g

Your tank is looking great, very clean. I've got a 14g BC as well and I'm currently having a hard time getting rid of an algae problem. You are definately doing something right!

What LFS in the South Florida area do you use? I'm always looking for a different LFS to check out.

Re: My New Nano 14g

I actually live in Margate myself.

I purchased all my tank equipment at Big Al's - University and McNab in Tamarac. If you haven't been there already, I suggest leaving your wallet home and check it out first. (you'll thank me later).

There is also a really cool store for coral in Boca Raton called Barrier Reef and there is a little pet store next to Publix in the Ramblewood Shopping Center in Coral Springs. They have some nice coral in the back and the employees will even cut the coral down for you if the piece is too big. They have good fish too. But - it does smell like a pet store when you walk in (whew!) but the employees are really nice and informative.

I did stop by another lfs in northern Coral Springs and Jawz in Fort Lauderdale, but they appear to be equiped for large tanks and no other customers were in the store. I personally like stores filled with customers, because sometimes I can get good feedback.

Hope this helps.

Re: My New Nano 14g

Great info, most of my livestock is from either Big Al's or Pets Unlimited (next to Publix on Ramblewood). I am going to definately have to check out Barrier Reef in Boca.

Re: My New Nano 14g

Can't wait to see pics of the new coral. What did you get?

I've got a question for you, what temperature range do you maintain? I am having the hardest time keeping the temps down on my 14g BC (80 - 84 degrees). I am looking for simple mods that may help the situation.

Re: My New Nano 14g

I bought a little thermometer that has an alarm when the temp reaches 82 degrees.

Here are a couple of suggestions, water changes help keep the temp down, limiting the bright lights to 7 hours instead of eight and putting a small baggie with ice cubes and monitor the temperature drop to approximately 80 -81degrees. I haven't had any problems yet.

I bought a new power head that doesn't generate much heat, so you may want to see what you have in the tank.

Ok, here's what I bought.
Pocillopora damicornis - Green - ORA
Red Blastomussa
and a Bushy Acropora -Blue

I was having a heart attack trying to place these in the tank. I don't like the epoxy stick I was using, it was sticking to my gloves more than the coral and live rock. I'm telling you after an hour, I was in a pure sweat!

I hope to get pics out this weekend. I was setting everything up in dim light tonight so I can hardly wait to see what they look like tomorrow.

Now, time to

Re: My New Nano 14g

When you say you bought a new powerhead, are you referring to replacing the filter pump or did you add an additional powerhead in order to increase flow? Thanks for the information.

Looking forward to seeing some pics!!!

Re: My New Nano 14g

nice looking set up you have going here. I hate your having trouble keeping the clowns. Ive had two going strong for a while now. I like what you have going. Those mushrooms look very nice. When you can get up the nerve you can cut them and make more. I was nervous about doing it but once I did and they actually attached to the Live rock rubble im very stoked about it. Its a money saver in the long run as well. You can prob get 4 from one of those suckers. Good luck ill def keep watching your progress.

Re: My New Nano 14g

if you dont have a ph in tank i would reccomend one for the acropora which is sps and might need better lights and a more established tank. so watch them and if they start to detoriate take them to a lfs so they can save them

You mentioned that you have a skimmer; what model do you have and how is it working?

Re: My New Nano 14g

I am also very interested in what protein skimmer you are using. I have a 14G biocube and I desperately need to hear about a skimmer that is working for someone. I have the fission nano and it is terrible and the reviews on the biocube protein skimmer also reflect a poor product.

Thank you,
DuBose
