Just chucked the sponge filters.Gone FUGE

Pulled the sponge filters last night from the back of my 24g nanocube. Figured I never rinse them and I do weekly water changes so why bother with them. All that is left is the carbon and the phosban packs in the middle chamber.

Is this advisable? It seems the water was crystal clear before but now is a little cloudy. Also there is more noise from the water trickling into the back chambers.

Re: Just chucked the sponge filters......

If you don't remove them entirely you will need to keep them extremely clean. They frequently become detrius traps and the cause of high nitrates. If it is an Aquapod don't forget the one way down in the bottom of chamber 1.
I replaced the sponges with some simple filter floss that I changed weekly.
I am sure the cloudyness is due to the detrius released when you pulled out the sponges.

Re: Just chucked the sponge filters......

I kept the 2 sponges in the first (overflow compartment) I tried to do with out but had a microbubble problem.

I just rinse them well every waterchange

The filter floss gets rid of the micro bubbles and you just pull it out and replace it.

Re: Just chucked the sponge filters......

UPDATE: Talked with JBJ on the phone today. The rear of my nanocube is now a FUGE. It now looks like this:

First chamber: Charcoal baggy then Phosban baggy
Second chamber: ceramic rings on bottom then Cheato in main chamber. Added a water repellent LED daylight on a timer on top of this chamber to keep the Cheato photosynthesizing. Will be adding tigerpods as soon as they come into my LFS.
Third chamber: Pump.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Crap. My new open brain is starting to bleach and I just learned that you are supposed to remove sponge filters and bioballs gradually not all in one fell swoop. Ooops, hope everything survives the transformation.

Run the fuge light on an opposite schedule and it will help minimize ph swings at night.

Rio Mini Sun LED

I got it at my LFS for $30, but here is a link online. It clamped right onto the chamber wall in the rear of the nano.

Looks like a good deal but how are you going to mount them?

I figured that they would just sit in place on either side of the chaeto....but if they move around too much i could use a suction cup clip....like the ones that are uses for the heaters.

My understanding was that you want the cheato free to rotate and move around in the fuge.

Re: Just chucked the sponge filters......

Cheato does like a fair amount of flow and likes to tumble.
