33l reef

Hi all,

I have been kicking around the idea of downsizing into a 33L.

So far I am thinking I am going to drill the bottom and install an overflow with 3/4" drain. I am also going to drill the back center for a closed loop. I figure I will run all of my plumbing over the back instead of drilling returns. I was going to run a large sump to bring my total water volume to aleast 60 gallons. I was thinking about running a mag3 from the sump and possibly a mag3 again on the CL I want about 15-20x flow for a stoney tank. I have heard that mags shouldn't be run external. is there a good external cl small pump? I heard the quiet ones aren't that quiet. I like the eheims but they are super pricey.

Do you have recommendations for flow on this tank? I was figuring 500 gph would be good. but could go more. I do have some lps that like lower flow.

thanks

tom

33's are a 55g with the top cut off. 55's are skinny - 33's, skinny and short, not alot of room to work with and limits room for vertical growth.

Hi Tom,
I run my mags dry-mounted. Have heard that same info, but have never had any problems running mine dry.

Thanks all. I guess I will run two mags then. The circulation is going to be the hardest part of this tank.

Wit, yeah i know what I am getting into. It is a long squat and oh so not deep tank. I look at it as a challenge. I might hate it, I might love it. We'll see. It is the challenge of the nano.

I really love the look of a 20 long reef. So i figured I would do a 20 long but a just little longer. With the stuff from my 65 I should have it packed! all the more fun.

Thanks

tom

I did like the idea of a 33l but it was like pulling teeth from a chicken to get one here so i set up a 30breeder the fact that it is a foot shorter in length is made up for in the 18inch front to back space it makes a really nice bare bottom tank as long as you have a sump I have a leather in there that is about 10 inches tall and 8-10 across but they do look nice and are easy to aquascape HTH.

I run a Mag 12 external, and have called Danner on the info of not being able to. They said quote "There is no reason that you can't run a Mag pump external, it is printed right on the box."

Cool so I'll go mag external!

Semi-I have a 65aga right now that is the same demensions as the 30 I agree it is a great sized footprint.

I might be kicking myself later on but right now i am not really interested in a really deep scape. I am thinking of running basically a ramp of rock from front to back and creating a real tight reef.
Since the tank is $65 it is not that much of an expense to give it a shot. I am making my stand 4X2 so i can run any tank up to that footprint. I am making it beefy enough to carry a 120. If I need to upsize it is just a matter of getting a new tank and upgrading pumps. I am anticipating a move in the next year so I figure that if I down size now and take out the dsb. It will be easier for me to setup again or go larger. Maybe I am downsizing too much? dunno yet. maybe I will make a 4x2x1 That might be an idea.

Thanks for the input

One thing about running mags on a closed loop, sometimes you will have noise issues.
I ran my mag 12 on a closed loop for a short while, and it was incredibly loud, however I have one at the store plumbed external as well and it is fairly quiet.
BTW, I have a 40BR. I love it, I downsized from a 55. I would have done a 75, but I was too limited in space and the 40 was a nice compromise. I would have rather gotten an Oceanic 56 or the aga 65. But I'm quite happy with the 40.

I think it is 13 deep 12 high 4 ft long. I am thinking in other directions now but it is a sweet foot print!

I used to keep oscars in one of those, and almost set up a reef in one, but decided to get the 50, just cause I could. It is a cool sized tank, just not fun on an already short stand
