Re: corals for a nano?

Ha ha Al lost his internet connection

you really don't need a skimmer for an 8 gallon tank I run a 5.5 gallon skimmerless with 1 small strawberry basselet and corals - if you are consistant in your testing and waterchanges you will be fine with soft corals
I have zoa's, baby toadstools, 2 different sinulara sp leathers, clove polyps, and shrooms
you do need to use ro/di for making salt water and topping off the tank though

Re: corals for a nano?

Dr Hank gave you the best advise and explained why.
Quote:
I would do the fish last because it will contribute most heavily to the bioload of your system. It will give you more time to learn how to maintain such a small volume of water. That is simplified when you leave the fish out of the equation.
Also by adding the fish after the coral it gives you tank more time to mature. The bacteria of the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate cycle will have more time to multiply and thus be better able to handle the bioload created by fish.
I would not add a fish first.
I have a 12g nano for nearly 2 years. I did not add any fish until the tank was up and running for 9 months. I started with Mushrooms and GSP then after a couple of weeks added some zoanthids. I always waited a couple of weeks between adding corals to give the tank time to adjust to the new livestock.
Here is a pic from a couple of weeks ago

Re: corals for a nano?

That is a great looking nano. I probably wouldn't have had the guts to add the LPS and would probably have tried some xenia instead. The rics look very nice. I love the cleaner shrimp and you chose wisely as far as the clownfish goes too.

Jeff, I believe I'll get back to you if I ever try to go nano again.

Re: corals for a nano?

thanks for all the advice about the corals. is there any way that an anenome would stand a chance in such a small tank? i'd love to have one, but i might have to save it for my next tank!
there are small species, right?

Anemones get quite large and the light they require (Metal Halides for the most part) make them impracticable for a Nano

Re: corals for a nano?

Wit han 8 gallon the skimmer is pry not needed. Just be sure to keep up on water changes very regularly. You have some great advice... being patient probably the best but hardest to follow as a newbie. Good luck!
