| Scopas Tang | Nano Cube 12dx Upgrades??? Are there any substantial upgrades that I could make to the filtration system of the Nano Cube 12dx? The only thing I did do was upgrade the pump to a maxijet 1200 and added a rotating return for more flow. How can I get rid of the sponges? Does anyone know if there is a skimmer small enough for the 12g? Thanks, Chris |

| Reef Addict (hopeless) ![]() | Re: Nano Cube 12dx Upgrades??? Is the tank Up & Running? How long has it been up if so? You need to get rid of the sponges & bio balls but not all at once if the tank is already cycled and dependent on them. If the tank is new and NOT cycled you can pull them out quickly but if it's up and running you'll want to do it in 1/3 increments. Every water change remove 1/3 of them and then allow the system to recover it's bacteria population so that you don't create a major cycle event all over again. This is dependent upon your tank being ready by: you're already using Live Sand, already using Live Rock and there's enough to provide the surface area for beneficial bacterial growth (1 - 1/2 lbs per gallon of water). As far as the "Fision Nano-Skimmer" just go ahead and toss your hard earned $$ out the window because the majority of people who have used it are thoroughly disgusted with it. Go ahead and save just a few dollars more and get the Saphire Aquatics protien skimmer. It's a quality unit that you wont be ashamed of. Also you can add a Koralia Nano powerhead to your 12g for added flow. I also added a nanotuners.com 3.24 light upgrade to mine but would probably opt for MORE if I did it again. Keep us posted and Happy Reefing ![]()

| Scopas Tang | Re: Nano Cube 12dx Upgrades??? Thanks for the reply BigAl. The tank has been running for 7 months now, and yes I do use both live sand and rock. I don't have the bio balls in the tank, only the sponges. After the sponges are removed, what will take its place for filtration? Thanks for the tip on the skimmer. Do you know if if the Saphire Aquatics skimmer fits into the back compartment on the 12g, or would I have to make adjustments? Thanks again, Chris |

| Harlequin Tuskfish | Re: Nano Cube 12dx Upgrades??? I'd wait it out for the EuroReef Nanoskimmer. Sapphire Aquatics has gone out of business, and a lot of people have been having issues with the skimmers. A MJ1200 should be plenty of flow for your tank, but what you can do (what I did w/ two MJ900's) is add another one to the first chamber and run them on a wavemaker for more turbulent flow.

| Reef Addict (hopeless) ![]() | Re: Nano Cube 12dx Upgrades??? The Bio-balls and ceramic media are good for a Fish Only tank which isn't as "touchy" when it comes to Nitrates. But a full blown REEF tank with corals and such is very sensitive to nitrates and those, if not properly cared for (cleaned & replaced) become a Nitrate Factory. The irony of this is when you clean them you remove the very reason they are THERE! You're also removing the beneficial bacteria that they are colonized with. I use ONE of the sponges in my 1st chamber just to collect any larger particles in the water column but I change it out 3x a week (I have 3 sponges so I clean and swap...). Hope this helps.
