Sunnie's 10g prop tank

My new hair-brained scheme:

Use a 10g we bought as a hospital tank as a small-scale prop tank.

I'm planning on ordering a 24" coralife 50/50 with lunar lights. That will put 130w on a 10g tank.
The bf thinks I should use a skilter we have laying around as my filter/protein skimmer/fuge. I'll try that for a while, and if that doesn't work my guy at the LFS is crazy about the subcurrent filter, so I may try that.
I'll be able to start it up with conditioned water from my established reef tank, put a few pounds of LR in, and for the rest get small pieces of rubble for the corals to attach to.
We're also talking about getting black sand. The boyfriend thinks it looks cool, but I think it will provide better visibility to pick out loose polyps.

Now I'm off to learn about coral propagation...

Re: Sunnie's 10g prop tank

Hey Sunnie look at the chronicle for my 10g tank. That's what it's about to turn into. In fact I installed some frag racks in it over the last few days and stared moving some small frags into it.

I think you'll like that light fixture as it's the one I have on my tank except they didn't HAVE the "Lunar Light" model when I bought mine. I just ordered new bulbs for it last night and upgraded to Current 22' bulbs which I hear are better bulbs. Keep us posted and seriously peek at my 10g Chronicle as it will be changing in the next few weeks when I move most everything from it into the big tank and start making Frag Racks out of Egg-Crate in it.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Hooray! It's a common crazy hair-brained scheme. I'll definately be on my way over to your thread.

I haven't thought about doing the egg-crates yet. Where does one purchase such a thing?

Re: Sunnie's 10g prop tank

Egg-Crate is white plastic "Light Diffuser" sold at home supply stores to go into the 2' x 4' recessed lights like in an office. It's 1/2 squares and it's easy to cut and work with. I love this stuff. It just happens the company I work for sells this stuff so I get it fairly cheap. We also sell the PVC for the legs and even the green Marine Epoxy for frags. Can you say LUCKY?

Can't wait to see your Frag-Tank get started. I love mine!!

Re: Sunnie's 10g prop tank

Got the stand on order (should be here next thursday), and as it turns out, the LFS had the light in stock today so of course I bought it. I also bought some sand (Tahitian Black "Moon Sand"--haha. They kill me with these names) a whole bunch of LR rubble, and a few building pieces.

I put the LR in a tub with two power heads and conditioned water from my nanocube, then filled it with a W/C from my 46g reef to cover the rocks.

Picture time:

Tank with filter, heater, light, and bag o' sand

Close up on the skilter which will serve as filter/protein skimmer/fuge

Waiting for my stand to come...

Re: Sunnie's 10g prop tank

Looking GOOD Sunnie! I think you're gonna LOVE this set-up! Now if you can get all the KINKS worked out of it before I completely convert mine over to a Frag Tank I'd appreciate it

Re: Sunnie's 10g prop tank

Haha. One thing you've got over me, eg one reason you should get the kinks worked out FIRST (ha!) is that your tank is already established, cycled, and ready to go. I'm doing my best to avoid a big cycle with the cured rock and conditioned water, but I'm still not going to put anything living in there for a couple weeks.

P.S. Going to start the tank next week with water from a big WC off the 46g.

Re: Sunnie's 10g prop tank

Can you poke some holes into it, and tie it into your current system? My presonal experience has been that my frags seem to do better sharing the same water. Even if it is just a slow trickle from the mainm system, and use PH's for circulation. I have been considering drilling out one of my 40g breeders for a CL and use it as my SPS frag tank, and having it attached to the main system. I have two attached now, but have 3 more out in the garage I can hook up. Either that, or I will save these tanks for my "secret project".
