aquapod 24 filtration

Ok so I recently set up my aquapod 24.This is not my first reef tank but it is my first nano.Started out with 40lbs of ls,25lbs lr,and got premixed water from my lfs.I have read about a million posts on the filtration mods.My question is what is the concensus(i think i spelled that right)for this?I did not use the bio-balls or ceramic rings. All I have in the first chamber is the blue sponges and all vents blocked except the top.I think I have decided on lr rubble toped with filter floss but I thought I would ask before I do it.Thanks......

Re: aquapod 24 filtration

I would suggest the sapphire aquatics skimmer several members have them & really like them.

Sponges I dont like them to many issues I prefer filter pads easy to remove & toss every few weeks

Re: aquapod 24 filtration

I have a 24 gallon Aquapod. It has been up and running for a year now. I would recommend that you pull out both of the sponges. In my case, I have the AquaC Remora protein skimmer located where the blue sponges would have been. In my opinion, this is a great skimmer that works well in the 24 gallon Aquapod.

Re: aquapod 24 filtration

If you can find a skimmer that fits then I would go with that. Otherwise I would go with the plan you have. I believe the Sapphire will fit in one of the compartments but I am not sure how the remora would fit. If you can make it fit the Remora is a great HOB skimmer. I'm not as sure on the Sapphire since I have never had on and my friend just got hers so no review yet.

Re: aquapod 24 filtration

Thanks for the info.I've got to figure something out because I hate those blue sponges.Every time I take them out to clean the release cloudy water back into the tank.I saw a post somewhere showing egg-crate built to fit the first chamber where filter floss could lay on right below the overflow. That's also a thought for me.

Re: aquapod 24 filtration

I would definitely remove the blue sponges. If you keep them in then they need to be cleaned several times a week. Don't forget the one way down on the bottom of chamber 1.

I think that you may need to be cleaning them out more often if they are that dirty. I feel your pain. I have a Nano-Cube and I still use the sponges BUT it's here on my desk at work and I change the sponge at the worst every other day. If I get lazy and wait say a WEEK it's not a pretty sight and yes it makes the tank cloudy. Using filter media is a tad cleaner but it still has to be cleaned out religiously.

The Skimmer is an EXCELLENT idea regardless of anything else you do to your tank. It shouldn't be an option.

Well I guess my friend just reviewed it. Cat is the one I was talking about who recently got one.

Re: aquapod 24 filtration

In my 24 I have no sponges, no bio balls and no ceramic rings. I have 20 lbs of LR in the display and a lot of rubble in the back area with a phosphate pad on top. I have 20 lbs of live sand and going to add another 20 lbs. In the other chamber I have the saphire aquatics skimmer. I also have a bag of charcoal in the back area.
