Re: stocking plan for a 5 gallon.

Our sexy shrimp is quite a character. Mike has wanted to get two more for his 14 but we have a GIANT bristleworm problem in there...

Green clown gobies are cute, pandas have neat coloration.

Re: stocking plan for a 5 gallon.

STOP!The Catalina goby comes from cool waters off the coast of California. Tanks temps have to be below 75 for any long term success. Are you prepared to chill your five gallons?

Re: stocking plan for a 5 gallon.

I personally think the clown gobies are gonna be a bit too large for that tank size, they are usually shipped tiny but get a decent size. Not to mention if you are keeping sps in there it will already be difficult enough without a clown goby trying to nest in it.
Like Dentoid said above, catlina gobies are a cold water species from California, please to not purchase this fish unless you are doing a cold water tank. No matter what the LFS says they do not live very long in captivity in typical reef aquarium temperatures of 75 degrees and up.

Re: stocking plan for a 5 gallon.

I agree with Mike. I would just keep coral. And maybe a sexy shrimp.

OH!! Good to know. I didn't really read about the catlina, just saw a pic and thought the colors were pretty.

It's the bristleworm's fault, but there's only a cleaner adn a sexy shrimp in Mike's 14 gallon right now. The pods are so confident they're running around in the open, you cna see them eating and whatnot. Downside: the flatworms are running amuck too.

Maybe a group of 3 sexys could provide enough "movement"?

Red Stripe goby

Saltwater Aquarium Fish for Marine Aquariums: Red Striped Goby

They say 10g, but I think you can do it with just one in the tank. Now ya got me wanting to set up my 5.5g and pack it full of zoas or SPS.

Rcpolit - like the sig. Lol

I wouldn't do the gobys, neons aren't made for captivity and the clowns would do better in my tank . A trio of shrimp would be perfect - sexys.

Have to disagree with this since Elacatinus oceanops has been bred and reared in captivity for years....

Re: stocking plan for a 5 gallon.

i think maybe its the cleanner wrasse PEMfish was referring to.

have you looked at greenbanded gobies (Gobiosoma multifasciatum). a great colorful little guy that will help keep your sandbed turned and does some cleanning too. they only get about 1.5" and are also tank breed.

court jester goby (Amblygobius rainfordi) is another great little fish. it will munch on the rock like a tang and also does some sand sifting aswell. gets about 2"

i love the blue neon gobies (Elacatinus oceanops) too. and like said above, they are tank breed.

Seems to be one of the better algae eaters in the hobby IMO.
Do you think they are a good choice for 5 gallon pico tanks though prow? I would tend to think they are kind of on the large side since they swim around a lot.
I usually recomend the Trimma and host gobies just because they tend not to swim around a whole lot anyways.

Re: stocking plan for a 5 gallon.

i think a 5 gallon would be ok if not too much compition from snails or crabs for food and its a mature system. IMO, the hector's goby is more likely to starve in a smaller tank than the rainford's. same basic fish but the hector gets a little bigger and, at least mine, seems to eat more.(i have both a court and hector in the same tank) the need for larger tanks is more for Amblygobius phalaena and similar gobies under the Trimma blanket that need a big mature sandbed system. but your right, providing enough food is something you have to consider.
