nano-bano-oh-oh sofano------nano

I have a friend starting a nano tomarrow is there any differences between a nano and say umm a 120g tank? besides the obvious?

any help would be great. Like:

does he need a skimmer?
PHs (i know one but what about the GPH?)
heater (one 50 watter)
light for low light coral, shrooms, leather, etc
amount of rock (12g nano) like 6-10 lbs?
really dont want a DSB but cant have a sump on a nano right?

thanks
c

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Can't have a sump? It's okay to have a sump on a nano. Small maxijet powerheads would be good. two of them on each corner would be great. As for liverock 6-10 lbs is fine, whatever looks good for circulation, put one on each end corner of the tank facing toward the center, that way it will provide good more random water flow. IMO you will want a skimmer, just helps to remove stuff before it breaks down to pollute the tank more, it's been succesfully done many times w/o skimmers but those people usually are good at keeping up with 1-2 week water changes. As for lights PC would be good.

The smaller water volume of a nano is far less forgiving than that of larger tanks. It takes verylittle to upset the params, so a sump is an advantage, if you don't have a sump regular weekly water chagnes will help keep things in shape. The good side is that on a 12G tank a 10% change is only 1.2G, a whole lot easier than a 120G. A skimmer is a mjor plus, IMO, but it is possible without one. I agree with Danny on the PC lights.

If you can have an auto top off it would help to keep a small system more stable.
