20g High Nano

I have just retired a power compact light from my 30g high reef and would like to do something with the light. I put a T5 unit on my 30g high reef.

So, this Coralife PC unit has one 65w daylight and one 65w actinic. It's a 24" fixture, so it would fit right on top of a 20g high. Standard 20g high is 24x12 footprint.

That's 130w of PC on a 20g tank. Just over 6w per gallon. And I have it lying around. Don't have to buy another light.

Do you think I could keep some nice stuff under that kinda light?

Do you have a refugium? That would be nice lighting for a macro algae. Might need to change the bulbs to 10k though. Or else a frag tank.

Re: 20g High Nano

I have a CPR HOB refugium with a light already. I was planning to use that for the filtration on this 20g tank.

The 20g tank is only 16" deep, so I think the PC light should penetrate well.

I'm thinking about a frag tank. I was also thinking about bare bottom in the tank, but I read somewhere that it's only recommended for experts. I'm not an expert, but I'm not a completely green newbie either. Whats your opinion on bare bottom--especially in a frag tank?

I can run a DSB in the refugium. It will hold about 4--5" of sand. I got cheato in my 30g DT, so I can harvest a bit out of there and use it to kickstart the new 20g tank. Plenty of pods in that cheato.

I was thinking about stealing 5lbs or 10lbs of rock out of my 30g DT. It's over-full right now anyway, and that rock is stable and cured. It would be an easy start for the new 20g high tank.

Thanks

Re: 20g High Nano

I was just thinking a bare bottom in a frag tank would be easier to maintain.

Re: 20g High Nano

Oh, for the frag tank! Okay! Well maybe if you put a lot of sand in the HOB? You won't need to much filter because of the lack of fish!
