My NanoCube

I wanted to share some pics of my Nano, it's been up and running for just over 1 yr. It has gone through many stages and problems, but it has finally stablized, at least for now. The latest stage has been caluerpa and bubble algae, but I think I almost have it whipped.

Full tank shot

Some close ups
Blue Mushroom

Finger Leather

Pink Zoos

I have two clowns and they have decided to host a Flower Pot coral

I may soon be giving away or trading some Pulsing Xenia, as you can see it is the next thing that is threatening to take over the tank. I guess it's better than algae though.

Re: My NanoCube

Thanks everyone for the kind words, I've worked long and hard on this, my first expedition into the world of satlwater aquaria. I do weekly 1 gallon water changes and dose 1/4 capfull of calcium addative with each change.

Other inhabitants of the Nano besides the two clowns, are a cleaner shrimp, bumble bee snails, astrea snails, and two "evil" blue legged hermit crabs.

Everything is stock on the setup except the return pump, which runs almost twice the amount of water per hour the stock one did. I also removed all sponges and media from the back compartments. I am running a fission skimmer in the first compartment, but I really think the only thing it is doing is creating millions of tiny little bubbles

Re: My NanoCube

Which pump did you use in place of the stock pump? My Cube is a year old also and I'd like to upgrade the pump.

I am currently running a Rio 600 at 200GPH, it was the only pump the LFS had when my stock pump broke. Here is a link to one at Marine Depot.

Another good pump for the Nano is the Maxi-Jet 900.

I probably would've spent the extra $4 for the Maxi-Jet if I had the time to order online, but since I needed a pump quick I just bought the Rio 600. It has been working very well and quite for the last 3 - 4 months and the coral love the extra flow compared to the stock pump. No red cyano since the change either.

Re: My NanoCube

Those clown pictures are insane man. Very cool shots. Let me ask you this. I heard that Xenia spreads like a wild fire. Are those Xenias on your glass? If so did you place them there? I have been thinking of getting some for my tank.

Re: My NanoCube

Thanks for the photography comments Cesar, those were taken with my favorite lens, the Canon EF 100 f/2.8 Macro.

The Xenia does spread like crazy and they put themselves on the glass, I just placed a rock with some on it nearby and they spread to the glass. They have also spread to the back of the tank wall too. They are mesmerizing to watch.

Cesar and Woodstock: I would love to send you some Xenia, shoot me a PM with your addresses. I've also never shipped coral in the mail before, so if anyone could enlighten me on what to put it in and how to ship it would be appreciated.

Re: My NanoCube

Re: My NanoCube

Thanks daveat, yes it's a 12G DX, I guess I forgot to mention that little fact

Why is the Xenia hard to ship? It seems very hardy in the tank, but I don't know much about the propogation or shipping of corals. I know that you cut the Xenia by the base and attach it to a piece of LR rubble, but I don't know how to package it and ship it. Any suggestions, or just trade it or give it away locally?

Re: My NanoCube

Captive propagated Xenia ships much better then wild colonies but yes I agree not the best shipper. How bout Thermos trade ? Do they ship better that way ?

Re: My NanoCube

what i do with my xenia is wait for them to spread onto a nearby peice of rubble and then cut between the two... let it set in the aquarium for a week or so until it looks very nice and healthy and is growing and them bag it and ship it.

depending on where your shipping to/from i would wait for warmer weather.. ship in a WELL insulated package with one handwarmer per gallon.

depending on how far you are from the xenias destination i would plan out a trip to whoever your giving it too and plan some extra stops by their nearby LFS's or any LFS's on the way... that is a part of ANY trip i make now is to find a fish store to visit!

ALSO in the summer (hot) weather, plants, animals, corals are shipped with a ice pack instead of a heat pack
