Re: Recommend fish and inverts for my 12G JBJ

shrimp - skunk cleaner, peppermint, fire. i'd stay away from a banded in that small of tank, they can be destructive if crowded.

maybe a small sand sifting/serpent star (not the green one)

snails are good... i don't like crabs at all. i have witfull to thank for that. i have two scarlet hermits that have disappeared in my tank... i feel they are secretly plotting against me... i'm waiting for a coup de-crab to occur.

things like anemones and clams you'll have to wait a lot longer before adding... and they need a lot more light, and clams will outgrow the tank.

i'd stay away from seacucumbers, and the like... some of them can nuke your tank if they die.

fish!
percula clowns (pretty much any but the maroon yellow striped, they get too big)
any kind of goby, the goby/pistol shrimp pair is cool too
firefish (need the lid closed, they are jumpers, but very cool looking).

this is a great guide

Ditto to charlie!!

Wait until your tank has matured 6-12 months before adding an anemone.. and then only if you have strong lighting.

Re: Recommend fish and inverts for my 12G JBJ

Keep in mind that the stocking recommendations are for 1 inch of fish (measured at it's adult size) for each gallon of water. That means your 12 can support 2-3 inches MAX of fish. That leaves you with ONE oscellaris/percula clown, or a goby and pistol shrimp combo, but not much else. Tha nanos, while "cute" just don't allow much room for fishes. Unlsee you really pump up your lights from stock, an anemone won't live long. They need a LOT of light, and the stock lights that come with the nanos just aren't nearly enough.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

This should be ok because I have had a maited pair of False Perculas in my nano for over a year successfully.

Just keep up with the weekly water changes faithfully. Every once and a while I do 2 water changes a week as well. Good luck and post pictures as your tank progresses please.

Re: Recommend fish and inverts for my 12G JBJ

i would just make sure to be careful and watch your water params.. if you want to keep some high light stuff checkout nanocustoms.com and nanotuners.com

they carry upgrades for the nanocubes.

i would go with one fish. probably a goby and a pistol shrimp. or a pair of percs, but i think they will get to big. at 4" of growth they wont have a whole lot of room to swim

I'd suggest joining a local reef club if one is available. They can make some excellent suggestions and would be a good source of small frags for your tank.

Re: Recommend fish and inverts for my 12G JBJ

I just had my anemone die (Green Long Tenticle) IT was my fault though. I should of researched more and waited alot longer only had the tank up for 2 months. When you talk about lighting How much light is enough? I have a 12 gal Aquapod (54 watts total) Is this enough?

Most everyone will recommend Anenomes in only high lighting tanks.
That usually means MH, or very intense T5/PC/VHO lighting. I also have an APod 12 with stock lighting. I feel it is way too low. If I had a 70W MH or jacked my lighting up to 70-80W PC I may consider it, but the other thing is that Anenomes usually are recomended for tanks much larger than 12 gallons.

Honestly, I love anenomes, but I think my Apod12 has three strikes against it and I am going to stay away. I am considering getting a NC24 with a Viper 150W MH. That will be my anenome tank, if I get one at all.

My 2 cents
Fred

I gotta agree with Boomer here. A full grown female ocellarius is big and mean. I would suggest no smaller than a 20 for a pair. Yes you can keep them in there for a while and they will be fine, but at full grown size it is just to small for them. You will see that male eventually get a beat down from the girl. Stick with small gobies or small blennies and inverts in this size tank.
