Flow for 12G NC

I have a maxi jet 900 set up to return water into the tank at 230 gph, but I think my Y-connector and flare nozzles are reducing the flow greatly, I'm wondering if I should replace this setup for a hydor FLO?

Re: Flow for 12G NC

Hummm... not sure. How much head do you have on the return? Maxijets are not made to withstand head pressure so you may want to try a different return pump.

Re: Flow for 12G NC

lots less. you actually have no head because all of the flow is below water level. you don't have to pump water up if it is all below surface level

Re: Flow for 12G NC

Aight well it just seems like so little, so I was wondering what may be causing that, maybe it's because I have 2 sponges in chamber 1, should I maybe take 1 out?

Re: Flow for 12G NC

Try it; it may help but I am guessing the "Y" is reducing it a lot. If you decide to keep the sponges make sure you clean them every few days

Re: Flow for 12G NC

Head Loss Calculator

Vertical length in feet 1.5
Horizontal length in feet
Pipe diameter in inches 0.75"
Choose your pump: Maxi jet 900
Number of 90 degree elbows 1
Number of 45 degree elbows
Number of gate valves
Number of ball valves
Number of union couplings
Number of swing check valves
Number of pipe exits 1
Number of pipe entrances 1

Total losses are 1.5 feet of head pressure, or 0.65 PSI. with a flow rate of 4 GPH. Process took 76 iterations.

You need a bigger pump. Even a 1200 will only give you 128 gph

Re: Flow for 12G NC

whered the calculator come from????????????

its actually hard to calculate because although there is one foot of vertical run, it is all below surface level therefore has ambient pressure on it.

in other words--- one foot of lift underwater is not equal to one foot of lift above surface area

oh well its interesting to see all the neat calculators out there. i was close i said 1foot it said 1.5 ft

Re: Flow for 12G NC

Confusing...But I'll look into getting a big pump, but it sure does seem like more than 4 GPH is coming out.

It's easy to check yourself. Time how long it take to fill up a cup and multiply it by 16. There's 16 cups in a gal.
So if it takes 30 secs to fill a cup. 30x16=480sec, 480 divided by 60 or 8 mins to fill a gal, 60 mins in an hour, 60 divided by 8 = 7.5 gph
Someone please check me on that??

I could be wrong but the way I'm reading it. It's 4 gph of flow.

A MJ900 is rated at 230 gph. I not thinking there's 226 gph coming out his return.

Re: Flow for 12G NC

Yeah, I know for sure its not 226 gph coming out nor is it 4 pgh coming out I'm guessing somewhere around 160-180, I'll try the filling up the cup thing though to.
