Does anyone know anything about Purple Nudibranchs?

I found a gorgeous bright purple Nudibranch the other day at my LFS and nobody there seemed to know much about it. I have looked online and still haven't even found out for sure what it eats....lol

Anybody know anything about them?

Thanks,
Deb

Re: Does anyone know anything about Purple Nudibranchs?

It might be that nobody (literally) knows what it eats. Many nudis are very specialized eaters, so much that they can't be accommodated in a home aquarium. I've seen a lot of really cool looking nudis for sale, but it's always the same, they are either sold or die within a month. I had a saleskid tell me they ate phyto plankton, which they conveniently had a new brand of, and flake food. That very well may be the case, but I don't buy it. Maybe someone here can help you with an id and it's needs.

They eat algae from everything I've read about them. I have a lettuce slug and he eats bryopsis

Not true. Most are very specialized feeders only eating a certain type of coral or sponge. Some feed on flat worms, hydroids, and other smaller organsms exclusively. They are much better left in the oceans as their needs can not be met in a home aquarium.

Very few are actually algae eaters, lettuce slugs are actually the only one that I know of.

No one really knows what they eat and I don't know of one successful case of keeping these in captivity. Some believe that they eat a specific species of sponge or bryozoans and will accept no substitutes. My suggestion is to avoid it !

I agree with Cheeks. Stay away from wasting money on these creatures. They are on my list of "things that need to stay in the ocean".

Try looking here:

The Sea Slug Forum - Home Page

If it's the one I think you're referring to, they eat sponges.

Re: Does anyone know anything about Purple Nudibranchs?

Thanks guys! I think I will leave it at the store. I found some other type of sea slug on my rock the other day and he ate one of my sponges so, I guess I am going to have to find it again and get rid of it. Yikes, I have to find it...lol, that is NOT going to be fun.......lmao!

Thanks again,
Deb
