Hyper Peppermint?

Approx 2 months ago I asked for help in identifying a peppermint shrimp that apppeared to have different markings than the norm. Dentoid helped identify it as a Hawaiian Peppermint.

I have another question. Last night I couldn't sleep so I came out to check out the tank at night and the peppermint was scurrying all around the tank. I mean for an hour he never let up. If the skunk shrimp got in his way which seemed to be ofte he'd bowl him over. A couple of times he seemed pretty aggressive and target the skunk.

The skunk is always very passive, and this morning I saw that the skunk had molted. I had a feeeling he was going to do that yesterday since he wasn't eating.

What is up with this peppermint? I had a very heathly clown for 3 weeks that suddenly died, and now wonder if he was chased to death.

Should I take him back to the lfs - or put him time out? (SUMP) lol - or is this the night life of a peppermint? - tank is too small for him to get a dance partner.

During the day he appears to be normal.

Thanks

Here's my first post with a picture of what he looks like -he's the one upside down.

Re: Hyper Peppermint?

I cant see it at all.....Mine is like what you are describing though, he really just kind of sits during the day, He is roaming all over at night, I can see him cruising in the moonlight, up, down, all around. Very cool the way he shimmers in the moons...

unless I feed something that is appealing to him, like omega one pellets(loves these, especially if I drop a couple in after dark) or cyclopeez, he loves that too. I did a lot of searching to find what mine was(I got him for $5 bucks, somebody gave him to a LFS, they didnt want it) Mine is a Hawaiian Candy Cane Shrimp, mostly nocturnal reef shrimp, check him out(hard to get a really good pic, but hes striped bars or red, LONG white "whiskers" with whitish on the exoskeleton:

Re: Hyper Peppermint?

Mine looks very much like yours. Striping on the tail. Mine has a red head and red antennae. Thanks so much for your pic.

Now, I'll wait and see what others say about what to do with him. He's pretty cool and I wish I had his energy LOL.

I currently reside in the Coral Springs area. You're not too far away. At least you don't deal with the traffic nightmares we have here. It gets worse every year.

Re: Hyper Peppermint?

IMO, it would be best to have one shrimp or the other, you do have a small tank 14g, I only keep mine in the 29 by himself, hes pretty big. I wouldnt get rid of him because of his behavior or habits though. Thats just its nature.

Re: Hyper Peppermint?

All of my shrimp are more active at night and at feeding time. I have never suspected them in any deaths I have had. I do have larger tanks though. That is an awfully small territory for 2 shrimp.

Re: Hyper Peppermint?

Looks a heck of a lot like a shrimp you could eat! Just not as meaty...

I used to have a peppermint shrimp that went nuts every day. He ate EVERY bristle worm he could find. He would go crazy every time I moved a rock around because he KNEW there would be fresh bristle worms to eat in there.
