Sea Hair maybe dying help

If my sea hair is dying do I need to get him out NOW. Im not sure, but he appears to be unable to stay on the ccannot seem to stick on the glass. and Now his mantle is slightly open and slightly is oozes his black ink (very slightly) . Is this thing dying, and will it's demise cause deaths to my corals and fish? Or is this normal behavior and not to worry?
I will test the water but I do not trust my reagents, as they are not very new.

Re: Sea Hair maybe dying help

IIRC, (and maybe my evil twin will see this and chime in) there are only one or two sea hare species that are actually suitable for our aquariums. The rest basically starve.

IF the animal is dying, you'll certainly want to get it out of the tank before it does. They have the ability to wipe out a tank when they die.

Re: Sea Hair maybe dying help

I have plenty of various algea in the tank. could starvation still be the problem? I got it to help stem the alega growth. It sounds like the Sea Hares are as bad as sea apples to keep. I have seen posts where sea apples have killed entire tanks when they died, I was advised (probably incorrectly it sounds that they were not toxic.
I checked my tank peramiters so far:
Ammonia is 0,
Nitrites 0,
Nitrates 20ppm.

Im going to see

Re: Sea Hair maybe dying help

In all of my research I have not found an instance of Aplysia causing a tank wipeout, but it is somewhat toxic to fish. If it does perish remove it very quickly and a waterchange is definately in order and you should run carbon all the time with a seahare in the tank as a general precaution. If you are worried about it and want to remove and euthanize it, freezing is the most humane way.

Re: Sea Hair maybe dying help

Seahares are nowhere nearly as toxic as sea apples. They can and do cause tank wipeout!

I would take it out and put it in a separate container of tank water so you can observe it closely. I would hate to kill it if not necessary but I would also not want it to die and ink in the tank.

Re: Sea Hair maybe dying help

I've read in many articles that the ink isn't nearly as "Potent" as originally thought.

I've had a couple expire (usually due to power heads) and even had one INK in my 10g tank as I was removing him from the inside of the power head. No ill effects but I do run LOTS of Carbon.

Re: Sea Hair maybe dying help

To my regret BoomerD is right. I actually have another sea hare that is different than the one that just died. It figures Id get two that are not suitable for aquariums. Now the second sea hare is failing-to-thrive also. He lives in a different tank. Before I bought them I read how great they are at eating algea. I asked the FS guy who advised me that they would be great in my tank and eat all the algea.. I gues I can say here another one bites the dust too.(or in this case 2).
I'm going to talk to the store owner and let him know this particular sea hare should not be stocked and sold and why. Based on his response I may or may not do further business at his store. I know as a buyer of these creatures it is ultimately my responsibility and no one elses.
