Nassarius Snail Nitrates Tolerance

Hi,
I am new to Reef Sanctuary. Have a question about Nassarius snail:
Recently, I purchase 2 Nassarius Snails. While my Sulphur De-nitrator (from Aquamedic) is running in, tank nitrates is around 10ppm and mounting. I read somewhere Snails tolerate nitrates to something like 25ppm. If this is true, it is about time for water change.http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/...s/confused.gif

i collect nassarius snails from tampa bay and i tested the water once and it was like 20 or 30ppm i also rechecked with a different tet kit the following week and it was the same...they were loaded up by the hundreds and they all seem to do fine year round at these levels. Now you need to find the source of nitrates....check sponges. do you have enough filtration like liverock....overfeeding? lack of water changes?

Thanx for the reply. I believe the de-nitrator from Aquamedic is kicking in, hence it should not exceed 20 or 30 ppm. It should be reducing and reaching something like 3ppm in about 1 week time, but I plan to change about 25% water of the 220 litre, 50 gallon tank, during Good Friday.

Anyone, having experience with this snail surviving nitrates exceeding 30 ppm, say 60ppm. Just preparing for the worst.

Be careful with the sulfur denitrator. If things go bad, (power outages and such) it can become an H2S generator...and can wipe out your tank...

GSELLERS, I always thought the snails from Tampa were the Ilyanassa obsoleta instead of nassarius vibex.
Still decent sand-stirrers, but somewhat predatory and not as long lived in our tropical aquariums.

Snails can withstand nitrates up to about 40ppm, so at 35 I would take some serious steps such as a 50% WC, then another in 24 hours.

I agree with framerguy. I've had them survive at 35-40 (assuming my test kit was correct), but you gotta try and keep it low for all the inverts. Good luck with the denitrator!

Thanx for all advise, especially on the denitrator. Will replace it with something better. Thinking of passing water through a HOD with chaeto inside and shining it with Luxeon LED, 24/7. Heard that this will work the nitrate down.
BTW, my nassarius snails pass away some few days ago, after staying in the tank for 1 week. I believe it was my fault. Recall: At the fish shop, the snails were rinse with tap water to get rid of any ICK, which I was visible on fishes in the same tank, then pack snails with seawater from another tank. Back home, again rinse them with tap water and did not drip main tank water into the snails long enough, something like 45min. The dripping was at rather fast rate. Will try again. This time be more patience.
