do these guys eat hair algae too?

Yes, they eat most non-calcareous green algaes except some caulerpa.

thats what i thought, my guy seems to pass it right up. do they actually eat the algae, or suck out the good stuff?

They actually eat the algae unlike their nudibranch cousins.

The spotted Sea Hare wouldn't eat Bryopsis. Atleast the one I had wouldn't. It wasn't until I got a true Sea Hare (Green Bali Monster) that the Bryopsis began to thin out and disappear.
