I had heard 3 - 7 years. The thing is, you don't know how old they are when you buy them.

i would say an average of 2-5 years. because you dont know how old they are when you get them like Terry said.

I've heard that you can expect them to live 2-3 years.

I like to get them on the smaller side, but not so small that there picked on.

It depends on what's in your tank. Small ones could become a tasty snack for even a cardinal fish. Just know that as a general rule, if it will fit in their mouth, they'll eat it and buy accordingly.
