Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

Since he's already proven to be a mushroom muncher, you may want to remove him from the display regardless of what he is. If he is a peppermint shrimp, he hasn't read the book. It could have been worse. At least it wasn't a prize zoa or ricordia.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

That's definitely a peppermint shrimp. Not sure if it's a wurdemanni. I'd still remove him.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

hmph, i know, but when you've only got two corals in the tank, they're both pretty special!

i've kinda draped my fish net over the two shrooms for the night to deter him for now. i might have to banish him eventually.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

The horizontal bands look too pronounced. The shrimp in the blurry photo looks more like the Red Rock Shrimp (Lysmata californica). Can't really tell from the photo though. Gat a tripod? Try to hold the camera still.

I hardly ever see mine out in the light.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

hmm, that's possible. he does look alot like those pictures, with the prominent vertical stripes.
well, whatever he is, he's banished now, in his original baggy on my floor. last night he revisited my mushrooms and they really don't look good at all.
i'll see if the LFS will take him back, otherwise my roomate and i will devise some sort of peppermint shrimp imposter torture!

shrimp are a crab with a good PR agent...always a risk when adding a "scavenger". opportunity is opportunity.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

Hadn't thought of it that way but I suppose that there is a bit of truth in Wit's statement. All I can say is that I've had great success with Lysmata wurdemanni . I got five of them and they totally cleaned out a moderate infestation of aiptasia in less than a week.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

I've had one or two aiptasia now and then, but mine won't touch um. He is bearly an inch long, maybe he is too small yet. He likes my blender mix though.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

Can you blame him. Why should he eat a tofu burger when you're offering him prime rib. If you want them to work. Cut your feeding back so he doesn't get anything.

Re: HELP! evil peppermint shrimp!

I don't feed him directly, I see him munching on scraps after the lights go out, that's cool with me. A little Kalk in the eye, and no more aiptasia.
