Does this look healthy?

Just added a star fish, not sure what type. Orange color, thick body, five tentacles. His legs appear to be pale, I can't remember if he was so pale when I brought him home earlier today. unable to figure out how to send a decent picture under 50 kb.

If you host your pics at a photo site like photobucket or some others out there.....you'll be able to post larger pics.

Re: Does this look healthy?

How did you acclimate the star to your tank? The way I understand it is to use the drip acclimation method with a VERY slow drip. Like 10 drips per minute. Let that drip for eight hours before placing the star into your tank. The star shouldn't EVER be exposed to air during this process.

Re: Does this look healthy?

Yea stars need some extreme acclimation. I have heard if they are not acclimated correctly its possible to not see anything wrong and then they suddenly melt away after awhile. Whereas good long term success can be achieved by acclimating correctly.

That's what I've heard too. I've also heard that stars won't/can't tolerate flucuations in salinity too. So an ATO is almost a must for these creatures, in order to keep the salinity very stable.

Re: Does this look healthy?

I purchased 25 snails, 2 skunk back shrimps and the star all from the same LFS today. He said that they could all acclimate together. I placed them all in a bucket with the water from their bags, then every 15 minutes or so I added 1/2 cup of my take water to the bucket for over one hour. I then netted the star and placed him onto a rock. He moved from that rock to the one that he is currently hanging onto.

Many times Stars do poorly because of poor aclimation before you even buy it

Re: Does this look healthy?

It also depends largely on what kind of star it is. I have had my orange serpent star climb out of the water without a problem. It scared me half to death but he climed back in and is still here over a year later.
I know the linka stars are very picky about water quality and acclimation. Apparenly the serpents are not as delicate.

Re: Does this look healthy?

I don't remember the type of star that it is. It has moved a little today but still wrapped around a branch.
