my first post ever in my life.

hello, My tank is really basic right now. I have 3 damsels,1 black molly, 2 blue legged hermits and 2 margaritas. I also have 35 lbs of live rock. I plan on putting some more live rock in as soon as i decide what i want from my tank. What i mean is do i want hardcore reef or carefully planned fish reef mix. i would love any suggestion as far as what to add next. I'm thinking fan worm or mushroom. safe stuff good for noobs. Here are some facts about my tank if you want to help me. 55 gal, Penguin 330 bio wheel power filter, 1 power head zoo med ps-40 270 gph, no sump, skimmer,RO filter or good lighting yet. $oon. I am looking for any suggestion weather it be livestock or equipment.

Thank you for readding, hope for a response,
saltyDan

welcome to RS and the world of forums. enjoy yourself~

shrooms are tough, pretty and not to choosy on lighting~

but the first thing id get is the RO unit. you will always need good clean water, without it, you will have problems that any other piece of equipment cant fix.

Re: my first post ever in my life.

Welcome to RS saltyDan

My suggestion is get rid of the bio-wheel, these type of filters aren't recommended for SW especially reef tanks, I would also definitely increase the amount of flow in your tank. Also 35 lbs. of LR is a bit light for that size tank, I would add some more at least another 20 lbs. of nice porous rock.

Re: my first post ever in my life.

Welcome to RS,
You are starting off with a good size tank, I started wit a 10 gal. and just now got to a 55. I would really suggest deciding on exactly what you want from your tank before you put anymore money into it.

Re: my first post ever in my life.

Welcome to RS! And good luck planning your way into a more complete system.

My two cents -- When Witt says mushrooms are "tough" I believe he means "hearty" not "difficult" so they make for a good early choice, as you noted. Just to be clear.

Can you get RO water from a local fish store? Do you have the room needed to set up your own RO/DI system without it taking over your kitchen or office? Your profile does not offer any clues here.

We live in a tiny apartment in San Francisco where an RO/DI set up is not practical. So we run an errand to the LFS weekly or so for top off and water change water. Sure it adds up, but the alternative has its 'costs' as well.

I would target a skimmer.

So many decisions! And so many trips to the bank! LOL

Good luck.

Re: my first post ever in my life.

Welcome, just to add my two cents.... Hold off on adding any more live stock until you have added all your live rock that you want and the tank has cycled and stabilized. Patients, patients, patients.... I always believe if you take care of the water, everything else will take care of itself. If you are looking for an RO/DI unit, take a look at the Typhoon III at www.airwaterice.com

Good luck and take your time,
