Hello, I already have a question

Hello Everyone!

My name is Chris. I am glad to be a part of Reef Sanctuary. Well just to tell you a little about myself and my setup. I have just moved and have gotten my tank setup again. Up until now I have a FOWLR tank with a couple mushrooms. I have been running a dual standard light strip. This is actually one of my first questions for you guys. I want to upgrade to compact pc lighting. Does anyone recomend any certain brand of fixture as far as quality, price etc.... Here's my specs 46 gal bowfront, 100lbs liverock, maroon clown, carpenter fairy wrasse, green mandarin, mushrooms, skimmer, and a cleanup crew. My tank has been setup for about 3 years now. I was looking at upgrading my lighting to 2x96 watt compact pc with lunar lights. This would give me a little more than 4 watts per gal. Does this sound ok? I don't plan on keeping anything reel hardcore in this tank but I don't want to be limited. I am planning a bigger setup for our new family room next spring. Nice to meet everyone and I look forward to chatting with you in the future.

Chris

Re: Hello, I already have a question

Welcome! It always starts with the mushrooms, hehe... the gateway drug of reefkeeping.

I had a 46 bowfront with a 3x96PC and it had more than enough light. For softies and LPS, I would think 2x96 would be good. I HIGHLY recommend you make sure you get a fixture that takes square-pin bulbs. The straight-pin 96's suck, and are expensive (bad combination)

Re: Hello, I already have a question

Is this tank going to be ran after the bigger tank is set up? If so I would say go with the PCs, but if your going to use the stuff in this tank when the bigger setup is bought, I would look at getting maybe one MH setup that could transfer to the bigger setup. Just a thought.

Re: Hello, I already have a question

Yes I agree with Ken get the MH setup instead of upgrading.

If you don't go with a canopy this is a great option...http://www.ah-supply.com/index.asp?P...OD&ProdID=3685

Welcome to RS!

MH are awesome but you could get by with PC's if your budget is tight.

Re: Hello, I already have a question

46 bow is a tough one to put MH over... trust me. 36" tank with a flimsy canopy and a big fat center brace...

Re: Hello, I already have a question

Travis it sounds like you have experience with this. I didn't think about the center brace. I was thinking a pendant that could be easily move to a bigger tank in the future. Would 2 DE pendant fixtures be 2 much for the tank? I guess 150wt ones wouldn't be, but then again they wouldn't make for proper lighting on a deeper tank either.....

Re: Hello, I already have a question

Thanks for the info everyone. I plan on running this tank in addition to my new setup so I will probably stick with the compacts over the MH. I plan on MH in the new setup as I will be able to build them into my canopy. Thanks again!

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~
