Hi from down under

HI All

We have a saltwater tank that has been running for about five months. We have done all the necessary set ups, allowed the cycle to mature, do weekly water changes but our fish seemed to die. We found that we had a manits shrimp, we caught it and now about five days later we found baby shrimp about 5mm long, are these baby mantis or another type.

Regards
Sam

Sam and Welcome to our Sanctuary!

Congratulations on your capture of the Mantis!
Do you think you could get a picture of the baby shrimp? Or, try to describe a little more what they look like?

Could be that they are another type of shrimp or a pod of some sort.

The shrimp were white/clear, two were on the sand and at least three over the rocks. They were out when we first turned on the lamp and scurried with the light on, it was more of a run than swimming.

We have been told that the mantis cannot produce as it is more than likely to only be one in the tank, and they sound like pistol shrimp.

Welcome to Reef Sanctuary Sam!

The critters you see are probably harmless 'pods'. Here is a great article on 'pods' http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-08/rs/

Welcome! Care to share your story about actually catching the mantis? You beat the odds. How did you do it?

Mantis Shreik

G'day all,
The story of any Mantis caught had to of had a bit of luck involved, and thats the case here as well. For months the cracking and popping prompted me to assume alot of things, the light, the skimmer or the filter I had absolutely no idea what a Mantis shrimp was till one afternoon i noticed my Damsel peering into a hole between the rock, just hovering there i walked over for a quick glance and saw this shrimp hacking at my sleeper goby #5 and shot out of the hole and smashed this Damsel to the glass making cracking and popping noises.
Due to his disfunctional personallity and unwillingness to conform to the tankhood rules i terminated her lease with simple manual labour.
A call to the marine centre quickly said "You have a Manta shrimp"
I waited till i could here a pop noise roughly guessed where she was ,slowly
removed some rock, then the dead Goby with large tweezers then she poked
out her head and scampered to the right (thank god) if she had went to the left i would of been there all day and night.I noticed by chance the rock i had removed created a slither gap so i was able to get a glass pannel (my lid) and splice it ,sectioning it off.
Piece by piece with aid from my beautiful wife the rocks were removed until the last one where she avoided our large cataphillia, scratching at the walls ,cornered and netted.
Any more questions,no dramas m8
Sam and Dave.

Good job!! I have a clicking noise somewhere in my tank. It is annoying to say the least! No fish losses like you had though (thank goodness!)

Exclamation Mantis BBQ

G'day
Glad i can still make you LOL,as to other stories well, some people dont let the truth get in the way of a good story, but alot of people get hurt from these critters and all the hours of research we have done on them makes me stand back a bit,and i would not of rushed in so aimlessly as i did.
I think a lotto ticket is in order perhaps.
