Newbie in Oklahoma

Hello fellow reefers. I am new to the hobby. I aquired my first saltwater tank 6 weeks ago. So I am just at the end of my cycle. But I have to admit that this is a somewhat addicting hobby. My 29g has just finished cycling, my 10g QT is still cycling and my husband bought a 55g yesterday that is just sitting empty because he has yet to decide what he wants to do with it.
Just wanted to say hello to everyone.

Welcome. Have you looked into any clubs in your area? I know there are some really good ones in OK. Sounds like you are becoming an official reef addict like the rest of us!

Worried about the costs to run a Saltwater tank?
Here are some tips on cutting back to keep your bills in the same range as before.

Put a timer in the bathroom, the family is now only aloud to take 5 minute showers, baths are out of the question.

Tv time is cut to 1 hour a night, we have to make up for all of the lights/pumps/heaters/chillers/etc. running

No more lights, duct tape all light switches in the off position. If someone needs light, they can sit by the tank.

Sorry bunny, I sacrificed you to help others save money!

Re: Newbie in Oklahoma

I haven't looked into any local clubs. I have just been researching online and happened upon this site searching for information about refugiums. But I am impressed with the information I have found here. The people seem genuinely friendly and helpful. I admit I have posted on another site a few times and was left with the feeling that it was more of a competition to who has the best setup and if you don't belong to our select group of friends here then we don't have the time to mess with you.

Cool Re: Newbie in Oklahoma

Howdy peeps, here I am, Kayla's hubby, Paul.

Yup, picked up my 55g. Not the average one, but it is 36x18x20 as in wxdxh.

It is sitting here in the living room with a chunk of resin fake rock in it for athmosphere...

It is going to be a reef tank and I have no clue yet on what I need to do right now.
I know it is going to have a lot of LS and LR. But for the rest I haven't really gotten into the rest of the equipment yet. I have time...no one is pushing me....Maybe Kayl, but okay...

The tank is not drilled for sump or anything. I know I will need good lighting, filtration and waterflow.

So, any input from ya'll is more than welcome. I want to set it up, doing it right the first time so I won't have any regrets down the road.

Nice meeting everyone.
Paul

Re: Newbie in Oklahoma

The pictures right now aren't very impressive. I have 3 in. ls and about 20lbs of lr so far. Oh yea, 3 blue-legged crabs, 2 false percs, and a red spotted hawkfish.
But it is going to be growing really soon.

Re: Newbie in Oklahoma

Welcome to RS! I know how addidcting this hobby can be. I'm up to 3 tanks myself and may get a fourth this week.
Well the most important thing in the hobby is to go slow. As long as you keep that in mind you will have great reefs.

Re: Newbie in Oklahoma

Okay, I know I am blonde but I didn't realize I was this stupid. I have been trying to upload a pic to my gallery. Followed instructions just like on the sticky, it says it was successfully uploaded but it isn't in my gallery. Maybe it got lost out in space somewhere....three times. lol

Re: Newbie in Oklahoma

since the tank is not drilled go to your lfs and ask to see the overflow boxes. I wouldnt recomend anything less than a 10g sump or refugium. Enjoy the new tank. Should be a great first reef tank. gl
