New guy from Northern Virginia

Hi. I've been reefing now for only 9 months so there's a lot to learn yet, I know. I've got three tanks set up - a 90g display w/ sump (which I really wish I had drilled!), 29g Biocube(that my wife encouraged me to get because she liked the look of the 90 - thank God she doesn't know how expensive this hobby is!), and a 10g tank for a hitchhiker mantis shrimp (I just couldn't get rid of him at the time).

Most all of my corals in my 90 come from frags taken from local reefers here in the DC area, though I did get one colony from a LFS. I got a great deal on my 29 from one local hobbiest that spends a lot of time buying, building, upgrading, and downsizing.

I'm really enjoying the hobby and am a member of WAMAS, the Washington (DC) Area Marine Aquarist's Society.

I was drawn here, actually, when looking for information on a DIY magnetic frag rack. There's an informative thread here from panmanmatt on his builds back in January 2008. (Magnetic frag mounts)

I look forward to seeing what goes on here!

Welcome to RS!

3 tanks in 9 months. Oh you have it bad!
Kudos for the mantis tank!
I have 2 wennarae sp in my 55g tank and one in my sump that is getting a new home with a local reefer (fishnu - here on RS) today.

Welcome! I'm in Alexandria and a member of WAMAS too. Perhaps we have crossed tracks? Looking forward to seeing your tank.

Can we support another mind to feed in the VA area?
We'll have to vote on it.

Welcome aboard!

Re: New guy from Northern Virginia

Thanks everybody for the warm welcome. I see that, for most of you, I have some connection to each of your locale's. Let's see now... Goldenmean, my ex-wife's family lived near Chicago; rlcline76, I supported an Army exercise out at Ft. Bliss years ago; SJS, my brother used to live in Rancho Cucamonga when working as a pharmaceutical rep in that territory - he's relocated back to the San Diego area (where I went to High School and where the folks still are) now, though; AQTCJAK, you don't say where you're from so I can't make a tie-in; Dentoid, you're right here in DC so that's easy enough. Victor, you're the only one that I don't have a geographic tie-in with. Growing up as a Navy brat, I've been a lot of places. The closest I've come to Sacramento, though, were the years we lived in Alameda in the Bay Area.... Hey, say hi to Ah-nold for me!

Now, Scott, 9000+ posts here but only 7 on the WAMAS forum?! Most of my tank and frag pics are up on the WAMAS board but I'll try to put a few in here. Mind you, most everything started from frags and it's not very impressive yet. Plus, I'm taking my time - after all, I got the itch to do this probably 7 years ago and almost took the plunge. At the time, however, I decided that I couldn't give all the time that this hobby was going to require and so I put it off until this last year. No need to rush things, right? Only bad things happen quickly in a reef aquarium - isn't that what they say?

This is my home, no place like it on Earth! No offense to the local forum, but it is one sleepy place. You post there and it takes hours or days to get a response. I"ll go check out your tank. Is your screen name the same on the WAMAS forum?

Re: New guy from Northern Virginia

Nice tank! I looked at your gallery over at WAMAS.
Is that a 90 gallon?
Is that Tampa Bay Saltwater live rock?

Re: New guy from Northern Virginia

Yeah, it's a 90 and it is TBS rock. Richard (over at TBS) gave me a good start with the rock, sand, clean up crew, and a bunch of bonus critters. I'd probably do it differently now, but it's what I did so I'm going to stick with it for now.

Oragami...one more connection, lived at Ft. Belvoir from 2001-2004, right outside of Alexandria...I know Rt 1 and King Street very well (and Potomac Mills, but we won't go into that) and I worked in DC.

Re: New guy from Northern Virginia

Well, it's exactly what I did. I have a 90 with TBS rock. I'm pleased with what I got.

Re: New guy from Northern Virginia

Rcline... Army, eh? I'm a Navy brat myself. Traffic's only getting worse in DC. If you've not been around here in a while, you wouldn't believe the changes at the Rt. 1 and Telegraph Road interchanges on the Beltway. Not to mention the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge and the renovation of the "mixing bowl" in Springfield.

Dentoid, I like TBS' rock just fine, I guess. It is a bit chunky, though. It came with a ton of life on it which was a big plus.

My 55g has TBS and I would do it again!
Of course that is where the mantis came from.
