new tank owner

I recently purchased the contents of a 75 gal marine tank and had everything transferred to my 90 gal tank. I have years of experience with tropical but we recently moved to GA and I wanted to start something new. Why is my white sand turning brown. Please tell me what to do. I have an exotic fish store very close by but since I don't have the technical words on the tip of my lips I feel they are looking at me like I am a stupid yankee...and possibly I am but I love my marine tank. Have 7 fish. Tang, purple trigger, 2 bassletts red hawk eye, tomato clown. Need your professional help quick. Thanks, Bubba

Re: new tank owner

That brown could be a diatom algae bloom.

Re: new tank owner

Need a RO/DI filter, or you need to buy RO water to get all the "bad" stuff out of the water before making your salt mix.

Your probably experienceing a cycle from disturbing the sand bed and such...

Re: new tank owner

Hello and welcome no1bubba

First off how "New" is this tank?

Try to get a picture (Camera phones do a decent job) so we can be more accurate in our suggestions.

Where is your "Source" water coming from? Is it RO/DI?

What type of lighting are you running?

What type of filtration ?

What are your current tank test results?

How long since your last tank addition (last new fish etc).

Many times a "New Tank" has what's been suggested above as "Diatom Bloom". If that IS the case here don't sweat it. It's just part of many new tanks. Your clean up crew will take care of it. What do you have FOR a clean up crew? Sounds like your tank may already be on the "HEAVY" side if it's new. If it IS new let's take a big deep breath and slow down. We have a LOT to learn in order to get this right. That's the FUN of it.

Again welcome to the Reef

with a SW set up there is one basic fundamental rule that we ALL should follow
When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

as Al asked parameters and source water are important to know, and will help you get some of the beginner lingo down.

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~

Re: new tank owner

the outfit I purchased had been up and running over a year.
I also have 2 of those candy anm's and the fish store will not take them back, is there a way to isolate them in the tank because I think they are pretty and other than killing them I don't know what to do. thanks, Bubba
