| Harlequin Tuskfish | Re: Help Again pls Debby, sounds like cyano, green and slimy? If so, increase flow to the affected area by aiming a powerhead in that direction. Second, you need to reduce the nutrients in the system. Do you use RO water for top-offs and changes? Regular tap will contain phosphates and organics which can feed algae. Uneaten food can also release nitrate and phosphate into the water column. Running phosban or similar media in your sump can greatly reduce the available phosphates in your tank. |

| The CodFather ~ | Re: Help Again pls btw, if a sea apple dies in your tank the chemicals it releases will nuke your entire system.

| Manta Ray | Re: Help Again pls Good morning Debby. Sounds like you have encountered a common headache with the hobby. The advice given is quite sound. Flow, nutrient reduction, RO/DI I would also suggest taking some time a cleaning the equipment. If you have a turkey baster, suck some of the red/green slime up and remove it from the tank. Watch how much you feed. |

| Madame Klanganator | Re: Help Again pls I would suggest waiting a few weeks before adding any more livestock. Test frequently and get a handle on your readings. Do the water change/maintenance routine... watch this nuisance algae problem and research solutions. From the reading I've done, it seems as though there are small tweaks to do "here and there", then you wait and watch... sometimes for WEEKS before you see changes occur. NOTHNG happens quickly, except maybe BAD stuff. I think watching things while you read up on beginning a reef tank will help you become familiar with what is going on in your system, and will allow it to stabilize. The sea apple chemicals, and things dying in there can take some time to sort out. Also, research the creatures you still have in your tank. There may be some chemical issues going on between them as well. I forget, are you running some carbon? Anyway, read up on the compatabilities of the corals, etc you still have in your tank to see if there could be compatibility issues remaining.

| Hey!Its not my fault ![]() | Re: Help Again pls Im sorry for your troubles Debby. The algae is normal in new aquariums. Increasing the flow in those area, less feedings and over all just keeping everything as clean as you can helps. The algae will slowly go away. Dont give up. Many factors may play into why you are losing the livestock. Something else in the tank like a hitchhiker check your rock with a flash light at night. Your LFS may be getting bad shipments in. The fish may be sick before you even get them. Always make sure the fish are eating and look healthy before you bring them home. If possible it is best to ask the lfs how long they have been at the store, If they are eating. It may be to much stress on the fish if they acclimate them to their tanks and than they go right to your tank for another accliamtion. How are you acclimating the fish? Might be another factor. Im sorry for your troubles. Hang in there.

| Manta Ray | Re: Help Again pls Hi Debby. Assume the Lotus position, thumb and middle finger forming a circle, smile and relax. Your system is not ready for more fish yet, so thank your son profusely, but tell him you will buy your own livestock. Your algae is a new tank issue and will subside in time. Many tricks will help, increase flow, RODI source water (if you don't have this, you really need it, plus you can drink the water it produces so it's not just a tank expense), higher alkalinity, lighting in the 14k range, etc. The fish in your tank have acclimated to the parameters that you have now, but new fish can't so let's wait until you have about three or four weeks of quality water parameters to add livestock. Did you actually siphon the algae out or just stir it around? Stirring spreads it, siphoning removes it. Something is feeding it so lets find what it is and get it under control. So...what's your water source, lighting, alkalinity, and flow?
