I made it

ok here it goes.
I have a 54 gallon corner tank that has been running for almost a year. Getting ready to tear it down this weekend this will be tear down # 2. We are having some problems with the level so we are going to reinforce the floor joists lay new flooring and upgrade to a 70 gallon corner that is BEAUTIFUL!!! Can't wait to get started. Will need loads of help from the people from the other world.

Re: I made it

My advice on this one is to not start this project without a case of beer. You have to keep hydrated...and just in case something goes awry, liquor is a good medicine and will keep you from panicking.

Re: I made it

I also like to stretch before I drink. Helps me "go loose" if I fall down. I believe it is addressed in SJS's Reef Maintenance Workout video (stephaniesquires).

Say goodbye to this look.
Thanks Ed he has been through this with me once before and he did pretty well. At least this time we are not starting this on a Sunday morning.

Re: I made it

Is the "level" off because of sagging in the joists?

Pay careful attention to WHY they are sagging. Approach a sagging floor from an engineers point of view..... if you shore up one part of the floor the weight still has to be transferred down into the foundation... by re-enforcing it just by blocking you may be transferring the load to another portion and it may not be designed to carry the load.

Example:

A floor joist is sagging due to not being "Large" enough to carry a load. The load is dead in the middle of the floor. You go to "shore it up" but you end up transferring the weight to ONE side more than the other and it's the weaker side. You've actually created a problem instead of fixing it.

Just be careful

Re: I made it

big al,
the joists are not sagging the stand is giving way. when they built the house they did not put down enough underlayment so we are adding more to it. also we are not jacking up the joists we are just adding pillars under them to help maintain the weight of the new tank. thanks for the info though I will run it past my husband.

Re: I made it

No problem. Just would rather I say it for NO reason and it not be needed than to NOT say it and wish I had Some of us come from a "Construction" background and this is a common "situation" with larger tanks.
