| Do I look as lost as I am ![]() | Re: New to...well everything! Hello and Welcome ![]() Decide on what you want in it long term. Add Live Sand (if you want a sand bottom) Add Live rock Get rid of Bioballs and any other "media" in rear chambers. Get a good quality salt mix and mi your water... add it to tank and then watch it cycle ![]() In the mean while go to Newbies, a little something on cycling/breaking in a new reef tank. and read all about this new thing called a Cycle... read it.. learn it.. LOVE it! it's a VERY integral part of EVERY aspect of the Marine Tank. The better you understand it now the better off you, your tank and your WALLET will be ![]() Again WELCOME ![]()

| Tridacna maxima | Re: New to...well everything! Welcome to RS!! I'm not familiar with siporax,,what's that. You are going to need some live rock so I think your next move is to figure out which kind you want. Pacific East Aquaculture (PEA) is a great place to get Tonga Fusion rock and that is a good live rock. If you don't have a book to read get Robert Fenners "The Conscientious Marine Aquarist". It's a great beginners book. Welcome again! Have fun and ask lots of questions.

| Reef Shark | Re: New to...well everything! Welcome to RS. How many fish do you have in there. Personally I would not put more than two SMALL fish in a 14 gallon tank. Once you add the sand Live Rock and other components, you end up with alot less than 14 gallons of water. I would keep the fish down to two small ones. Again, welcome ~Michael

| Reef Shark | Re: New to...well everything! If you want to have large amount of coral, you will need to limit your nuber of fish. I am not meaning to burst your bubble, but one fish is ALL I would have. Also stars NEED big tanks to survive. Most reef safe stars eat tiny bits of food, and film algea. Small nano tanks just cant provide the amount of food nessecary for sea stars to survive. What types of coral do you want to keep. This determines what you need to be successful. The secrect to success with coral is keeping a low bio-load. The more fish you have the more nitrates you end up with. Many corals just cant handle the amount of nitrates that are likely to build up ina 14 gallon tank with 3 fish. Just give us more info on what you want to keep in you tank with regaurds to coral. Then we can help more. ~Michael

| Do I look as lost as I am ![]() | Re: New to...well everything! In a 14g tank you have room for one smallish fish or two if you can keep water quality near perfect! A general rule of thumb is 1" of ADULT fish per 5 gallons of water. Take your 14 gallon tank. Add sand and rock and you're lucky to still have 10 gallons of usable water. That limits you to one smallish fish. ANY more than that and you're only setting u for a tank crash and roller coaster of problems. (Problems = $$ and heart ache). Michael's right. Starfish are questionable in any tank but for any type of long term survival they do need a much larger tank. Are the lights stock? If so, it's a good idea to upgrade them right off the bat so you can start planning your long term tank now and work towards it. good luck and HAPPY REEFING!!
