Question just starting with a 55 gal reef tank

Hello All,
We are new to this, just starting with a new reef tank. It has been set up about a month now, added cleanup crew, few frags. All was going well until we added the damsel and clown, both got ick in 24 hours. i pulled them and flushed them. Now what do we do? Is are tank infected? we have live rock/sand, there is so much to learn about this. We do not have a QT. Please help, thnik we moved to fast and are now going to pay for it!

Welcome to RS.

You did move quit fast. Take your time. Read everything you can. Explained your tank, what equipment, sand/live rock? ect... Check out the search bar and search anything your looking for. here is a good place to search as well.
Home - Reefkeeping Magazine Online. use the search function and search for what your looking for there too. Hope you have a camera. this forum loves pictures. Your tank is infected. It would be best to leave fishless for a month or so.

Actually 8 weeks is recommended for leaving your tank fishless or fallow. Search these forums there are a few people battling Ich right now so the info you need is already posted.

Re: just starting with a 55 gal reef tank

The 55 gal tank is fishless. I do have a cleaner shrimp, snails and 2 crabs in it. I do have live rock, 2 cucumbers, 3 frags and a coral. When you say fallow , do you mean just fishless? And do I keep filters, jets and skimmer running? Do I do water changes and what else? I have been researching and info is very hard to find. I did read the post from Leebca, very good. We are so new to this that I do need help in what steps to take next besides leaving the tank fallow for 8 weeks. Like I said before, the tank is 5 weeks old, I know we made the mistake of moving fast. I did a 5 gal water change on 1/19 as directed by the guy we have bought everything from, including his saltwater, except the fish, added 4 gal salt, 2 RO. Then we put the fish in. Should my water be the same temp at tank water when I do a change? Water test have been stable but last test 1/21 was temp 79, ph 8, ammonia 0.25, Alk 2.8, Nitrite 0.01 and nitrate 10, this was after I removed the two fish with ick. Any help and help from anyone including leebca would be greatly helpful. Thanks, Dolphinwatcher PS QT coming intp place during my 8 week wait, now I need to know how to set that up but will see what info I can find on that.

Yes. the water should be the same temp and have the same Salinity.

As for the QT you can click on the link in my signature on my first QT. That thread also has links in it to other QT threads. Good Luck!!

Re: just starting with a 55 gal reef tank

Welcome!
Your Ammonia and Nirtite levels ahould be ZERO. THese are very toxic to fish and even worse to corals. It sound like your tank is either cycling, or was never very well cycled.
