This forum is awesome!

Just found this site today and I've been reading and posting all day long. I've already learned a ton and it's excellent and rare to find a site anywhere on the internet with so many people who are helpful and polite. I am impressed!

I'm newish to the reef hobby - i set up my first reef just about a year ago after converting my 75 gallon tank over from freshwater. I'm still running a 30 gallon with fresh. If anyone likes to browse photos, here are some!

Pics from my reef

some freshwater pics if you're interested

Thanks again to everyone here for being so helpful already!

It's been fun conversing with you Bill! Nice pictures! Let us know how you do with that Flame scallop. You have entered a hobby where the sky is the limit and a reef forum where learning and teaching are fun and unconditional. Looking forward to more fellowship with you!

Bill, your tank looks great. We're glad to have you with us on RS. You wisely anticipated the request for photos and avoided the multiple posts you would have gotten requesting them.

We are always very careful to try and keep our level of awe below full and thank you for your assessment of being awesome as opposed to awful as many other sites have become.

Seriously, Welcome and we're glad to have you.

Sadly, I lost that scallop a while back. We had a strong thunderstorm that knocked the power out for a while. I used a mini generator to keep the heater going, but couldn't power any current for long enough. It closed up after that and never opened again until some hermit crabs pried it open and ate what little was left of it. I was lucky that I only lost the scallop, though! I was thinking about getting another. I've since gotten a couple other powerheads that I could more easily power in an outage.

Re: This forum is awesome!

Sorry about that. Scallops generally don't do well in captivity. Probably because in nature they are not found on reefs. They generally are found in grassy sea flats and mud flats. I was hoping for someone with success!

Re: This forum is awesome!

If you are interested in mollusks, consider a Tridacnid clam. Your tank is old enough and if you have metal halide (MH) lighting, the Crocea and Maxima clams are stellar and very colorful!

i say this as my best advice to a beginner. do not,,,and i repeat,,,,,DO NOT look at my tank as an example....i have a well practised eye, decades of experience, and a trunkload of failures to allow me to force the issue and get away with things most cannot~
