The Set-Up

We bought a Redseamax (34 gal) on an impulse buy yesterday. We were at an aquarium store and one of the customers told of of another local shop that was getting rid of its inventory. We bought the tank because it was discounted, not because we knew anything about what we were getting into. We have the stand and the tank in place. Our first challenge was to figure out whether the shrink wrap was supposed to come of the stand. Taking it off took more time than building the stand. I bought Saltwater Aquariums for Dummies and that seems like a good place to start. We have heard that taking it slowly is the best way to go. Sand and water next. We are using local pet shops for now but will probably rely more on on-line purchases in the future if that makes sense. Any suggestions on the setup of the Redseamax or other sage advice from veteran tankers would be great.

Welcome to RS!

Well you have come to the right place and with the right attitude.
The most important things are to go slowly and research everything before you do it.
Along with that sand and water you are going to want to get live rock. The recommendation is 1-2 lbs per gallon of water.
Put the LR and sand and water in the tank and then add a piece of raw shrimp from the grocery store. This will give you the amonia you need to start the cycling of your tank. While the tank is cycling you have time to do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions. Meanwhile you will need to start testing the water to see how the cycle is progressing.

Hello Welcome to RS... Slow is the way to go in this hobby... Get the water, sand ,rock and the deli shrimp in a netting and let the tank cycle for 6-8 weeks.. In the mean time grab some good books and read, ask alot of questions and learn.

Forgot to mention - Dont add any livestock to the tank until after the 6-8 weeks.. Get all temp and salinity readings in check during this time.

welcome to RS! cool nano you have! whats the watts on your lighting... i have a nano cube and i got the upgraded lighting system, which is 150watts/14,000k HQI. your lighting will depend a lot on what type of coral you want to put into your tank...some are more light demanding, like SPS corals, clams and anemones. and some need to be in a tank when it is mature(like a year old) just giving you an idea on what to look for when you research your livestock! gl with the tank! and dont for get the pictures!

Lighting = 6x250 watts MH, 2x96 watt PC ,and 2x140 watt VHO for a total watt of 1,972 watts . New addition on 4-14-07 of 100 gallon sump and 100 gallon refugium. I think I have lost my mind.
