Our tanks any tips?

Hi there we have 2 marine tanks. First being our 55g tank been set up for about 10 months now we have a ocellaris clown, striped damselfish and a blue green chromis, one hermit crab a long spined urchin, blue linckia starfish and a bubble tip anemone and plenty of little feathers, mussles barnicals etc. We have a sump filled with rock and bio balls also have a fluval 405 and 3 powerheads. Only just put in bubble tip, starfish and urchin. Feed them with misis plankton and 2 other liquid coral foods, also got told to feed bubble tip with lancefish. bubble tip has rejected 2nd feed so any suggestions or tips on behaviour or care greatly appeciated. 2nd tank has been set up for about 3 months now its 140g tank and home to our porcipine puffer who is called Bob and is said to be 22 years old, we got him from a shop that was having to shut down they had had him as a pet all that time. He has a fluval FX5 2 powerheads and seems to extremly happy since moving him to this tank. He eats cockles shelled and just meat.

Welcome! I would slowly wean the 55g off of the bio balls, and put a skimmer on it. What kind of lighting do you have on the 55g? How does your water test out?

Hi Gayle! Welcome to the RS!

This sounds like a 55 gallon reef and a 130 fish only. Get the fluval filter and the Bio-balls out of the 55, they'll cause you nitrate trouble sooner or later. A good protien Skimmer (rated for at least a 150 gallon tank) should be your' next purchase for the reef tank. You didn't mention lighting, Metal Halide is best, supplemented with some sort of Actinic lighting as well.

Keep trying to feed that Anemone! Mine loves Silversides, try putting the silversides in near the Anemones mouth, with a long forceps, and wiggling it around a little. If She's hungry, she should close right up on it. Anemones also love light, seemingly the more the better. Take good care of her, and she'll outlive you, even if you're very young! Check out the Anemone Forum for more help and advice about BTAs.

The FO sounds ok, but you might want to add a bunch of live-rock for its' water quality improving benefits.

Regards, Dean

Re: Our tanks any tips?

Welcome to RS!! The Anemenes will eat the food if they are hungry, and drop it if they are not. Try several foods and note which they like and don't. Also feed the whole food, (all of the shrimp, fish, what ever you use) there are different nutrients in each part of the prey. You can do it in pieces if you like though, but feed all if it.

Be careful with liquid foods as overdosing can lead to nuisance algae blooms. Feed the animals, not the water, so to speak.
