Reef Tank and A Goby

Hi all:

My husband and I have a 72 gallon reef tank and we have a just added a mandarin goby to it. We added the copepods to the tank and I am curious how often we need to add these things to ensure he is feeding properly. We have two tangs, an anemone, a royal gramma, two damsels, a yellow wrasse, a maroon gold bar clown and various snails and hermit crabs.

We have a great build up of live rock and corals, too. Anyone have any recommendations for adding these copepods?

Thanks for your help

Re: Reef Tank and A Goby

How long has the tank been set up prior to adding the goby?

Research the wrasse to make sure they won't be competing for pods also.

Re: Reef Tank and A Goby

Yep both good questions, vdituri. Mandrins need pods, pods need places like rock rubble where fish cannot get(sump) to reproduce and thrive. I have never had to buy pods but have thought about it many times. especially when I move the tank to another tank.
Once the tank has been setup(6 months +) and the tank is thriving(live rock growing, coral blooming, fuge producing) the mandrin will find food on his/her own.
Definitly check on the wrasse to see if it is a pod eater too. I ahve a six-line and a mandrin. Luckly the six-line eats mysis so I can satisfy his hunger for pods with frozen food.
If you don't have a fuge, get one. If you don't have a rubble pile, make one, and pour the pods into those locations.

BTW, my mandrin is fat and sassy. Although she/he is upset with my latest move to a 180. She was quite happy in the 90.

Re: Reef Tank and A Goby

I have a separate fuge set up pretty much just for the production of pods and other critters. I still buy a bottle now and then and add half to the fuge and half to the tank.
Seems like pretty much anything will eat pods so I want to be sure to keep the numbers up. If you look closely you should be able to see some. If you can't see any then I would say you need to allow more places to breed and to supplement the pods.

Re: Reef Tank and A Goby

We set up the tank in the beginning of September. Corals and mushrooms are thriving. We have a plenum filtering system covering a former under crushed coral filter. My fish store guy said the couple inches of live sand over the bottom would work beautifully, and seemingly so. There is a tube hole where the power head once connected, and I wondered about putting pods in there to multiply. The fish can't get in there. We have quite a bit of rock and nooks and crannies. Just need to check on the wrasse... Thanks so much!
