Getting a little salty

Hello everyone. Im new to the forum world but kept finding useful info from this site, so I deceided to give it a go.

I purchased a home that came with a stocked 125 gal. tank that was poorly maintained and stocked with assorted fancy tails and koi. I have cleaned and changed filtration to accomadate the present occupants but intend on giving them to a neighbors pond and switching to a fish only salt set up.

My present filtration although good for a fresh water set up (Fluval FX5) probably would not be able to keep up with the higher demands and gph needed for my new venture, so I purchased a Pro Series 150 w/ integrated skimmer from Pro Clear Aquatics. I have also purchased a Koralia 3 pump to move things around. Other than that I'm open to suggestions (hoping the previous purchases werent a mistake- still learning)

I believe my tank is an Oceanic 125 gal (72 inches (L)by 18inches (W) by 21 inches (H).

I look forward to all the insight and expertise this site and its members bring to the table (tank?). Thanks for all the future help.

Squishyfish

I look forward to all the

Welcome to RS Squishyfish

Sounds like a good start. You should start a Chronicle of your process.

Welcome to RS!
Not sure what the Proclear is so hard to give advice on that one.
The best advice I can give is to do a lot of research ask a lot of questions and go very slowly with the entire process.
One of the most important components will be your LR. Be sure to get quality rock and 1-2 lbs per gallon of water.

Re: Getting a little salty

Thanks. The Pro Clear is a wet dry filtration system. I am planning on using live rock but unsure as to when to add it.

Re: Getting a little salty

Add the LR in the beginning. First you will need to cure it. That is usually done in a tub of saltwater with a powerhead and heater. Test the parameters and do water changes as necessary to remove the detrius. Once the LR is cured put in in the tank with your water and sand. Add a piece of shrimp from the deli to start your cycle. Test your parameters until amonia and nitrite are gone. Then start doing water changes to bring down the nitrates.
I am not a fan of wet dry filters. They colonize the bacteria that is necessary for part of the cycle but leave the last step out which is converting the nitrates to a harmless gas. They are ok for FOWLR systems since fish can handle some nitrates. Corals and such cannot that is why we use the LR instead.
