| Limpet | Hello Fellow Aquarium Enthusiasts My name is Dan and I have a problem. Well actually it is an addiction in truth, every since I purchased a new house and had the need to fill it up. You see I am in the Navy and have always been single, and lived in small apartments or on the boat. But I got married and wow I must say that I have been a bit crazy with this whole fish keeping thing. I had fish a few times as a kid and have always wanted some of my own. Anyways the first week I mooved in I bought (2) 55 gallon aquariums, and now 4 months later have also purchased a 92 corner, a 65, a 37, a 125 and a 72 Bow, (4) 20s and (3) 10s. Now the 92 and 20s, and the 10s are not set up yet but have already felt the need to add an addition to my house. As to the set ups I must confess that I mostly have only fresh water, but do have and have plans for more salt. Lets see well one of the 55s is a simple community with a twist, the wife will only let me put red or black or red and black fish in it. The other is an interesting mix of silver angels, black angels and koi angels, with blue and honey gourami as well as some of the smallest gourami available. The 37 is a regular comunity with a Hienz 57 type mixture. The 125 houses a very colorful selection Malawi cichlids and then theres the 65 which at this time is my only reef tank. As to the 72 it is being cycled for a fish only salt water, and the 92 will be my show tank when I return from a deployment. I am only doing it when I return because at this time my wife is very busy as a nurse and taking care of "My" hobby. She used to only like fish that were on the menu and now she asks if the fish she wants to order is related to any that we keep. Well thank you all for your time and I hope to post some pics soon. Take care and have a great New Year. |

| Limpet | Re: Hello Fellow Aquarium Enthusiasts Thank you for all the welcoming. I really want to start a Reef Chronicle but my First reef is now about 4 months old, I just added 2 Banggai Cardinals the past weekend. I will put together a good one (Reef Chronicle)like the ones I been reading when I return in August. I have only about 40 days left before all the work on the tanks become the wife's sole responsibility. As to pics of my tanks, I will try, but it seems I am at work more than I am at home, and time at home is filled with the "Honey Doos". Anyway I hope you all have a great New Year. Blu |

| Limpet | Re: Hello Fellow Aquarium Enthusiasts Hello again all.. I am starting to have a slight Red Slime Algae problem... I think that is from lack of flow so moved one of the power heads around. Also i have heard that turf algae is bad and I see a small area starting maybe 2 inches by 3 inches. What should I do about that? I only have about 1 dozen snails (ast... the ones that start with an a) and maybe 10 hermits. I am sure I need more, whats a good number for a 65? You know I really should put pics here but I feel that my aquarium will not quite measure up the the great ones I have seen here. All that I have in my young reef are 2 Zoas, 1 mushroom, 2 yellow polyops and a devils hand leather. I have a couple others but they were hitchhikers and I am new to salt and there fore new to the names. I know that I ask alot being a noob but knowledge is power and I want to provide a good home for the creatures I place there. Dan Last edited by Hexabob : 01-06-2008 at 10:43 AM. | Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Hello Fellow Aquarium Enthusiasts Lack of flow can certainly contribute to red slime but the real problem is excess nutrients. Try feeding less and/or rinsing the food in ro/di water prior to feeding. Most prepared foods use phosphates as a preservative and this can easily fuel an algae problem. Adjusting the flow will also help by not allowing it to attach to anything. Another contributing factor can be old bulbs when the spectrum changes. Don't be worried about your chronicle or pics. We love when people start from the beginning or near beginning of their reef. For us it is fun to follow along and for you it will be fun to look back on later. It is really hard to see the pics when attached like that. Try uploading them to a photo hosting site like Photobucket and post the img tag here. That way you don't have to follow the restrictions on posting pics.
