Hello

Hi, we have an 80 gallon aquarium that has lately gone to you know where. It's a diaster zone, the reason is that I took time off to care for a dying parent and then got into a shortage of funds. Anyway, I want to get the tank back into shape and need the advice. I am running 2 fluval canisters, UV filter and protien skimmer, along with 3 power heads. I can not remember what my lighting is but from what I hear it's A+. The problem is that with the tank being neglected for about 1 year it's got alge. I had a REALLY bad deal going with REALLY thick green alge before and had to throw out my live rock. So now I only have about 2 pieces of live rock in the tank. My issue is that I want to get rid of the alge and have crystal clear water. My water is clear, but I think it can be clearer than what it is now. Any suggestions. Thanks.

Re: Hello

Well i would get more live rock back in the tank to aid in the filtration. Also maybe a filter sock to keep your water polished. Hopefully your using RO water for Water changes and top offs to keep the algae away. Sounds like you have good flow with your power heads. and What are you using in the canister filters? Ditch the media like bio balls, filter media, and sponges and use rubble or live rock. You have a clean up crew? The key is to get rid of the Algae and then keep up on keeping it out of the tank to begin with.

Re: Hello

Welcome to RS!
Your lights may be contributing to the algae as well. As the bulbs get older they change spectrum to one that the algae loves. Try getting new bulbs. That should help.
Do you have any livestock in the tank? If you have no corals try leaving the lights off for a couple of days.
Meanwhile the most important thing is nutrient control. Feed sparingly and do a lot of water changes to get things back in shape. A CUC will help a lot as well.

Re: Hello

Dito on cutting the lights off. Fish can live without light for a long time. You might want to replace the bulb in the UV also. There only good for about a year anyhow. Run the skimmer wet and siphon out as much of the algae you can. And add more rock to the tank. Good luck and welcome to RS!
