Red face T5 Lighting Swap

I'm swapping out my power compacts for some new Current USA Nova Extreme T5 HO lighting. Can anyone tell me if these will create new brown algea in my 75 Gal tank since these are brighter and I do have a couple pieces of rock with a little brown algea already on them? And also, should I acclimate the tank with this new lighting or simply turn em on? Thanks to all. RON

Re: T5 Lighting Swap

What do you have corals in the tank? and if so What kinds? You should always acclimate corals to new lighting or you may see bleaching receeding corals.. You can do this by cutting back on the hours the lights are on and slowly adding a little more time to the lighting over a few weeks time. Or you can raise the lights higher above the tank than normal and lowering them over a period of time(If the lights are gonna be hung). You may still see algae but it will dissapear over time... If it doesnt than you may have your lights on for to long during the day and the time may need to be adjusted.

Re: T5 Lighting Swap

Definitely adjust the livestock to the new light. You should do this even when just swapping bulbs since the new ones will be much brighter than the old.
Personally I like to use several layers of window screen between the tank and the light. Remove a layer every week or so and gradually more light gets through the barrier.

Re: T5 Lighting Swap

Number of layers really depends on how bright your current lights are compared to your new ones. Your goal is to initially create only slightly brighter tank conditions and after a few days remove one layer. Then later on another one until you're wide open. Hope that makes sense as I am eating, talking on the phone, listening to Christmas music (= singing) and working too

with a SW set up there is one basic fundamental rule that we ALL should follow
When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: T5 Lighting Swap

When I changed from PCs to MHs I used 5 layers of screen and removed one a week.
