Hello from Las Vegas

Hi, good morning. I've been coming here for advice in information for about a month now and found myself making my first post today. Probably a good time to introduce myself. I've been keeping freshwater fish for about three years and just put my first saltwater tank together a couple months ago. Right now I have two main tanks.

I have one freshwater set up. It's a 20 gallon long tank. It's all live planted. I've got a poor man's CO2 setup (40oz beer bottle w/ Active Dry Yeast, Sugar, & Baking Soda), and I fertilize with Seachem Flourish every five days or so. A 65W Power Compact lights the tank. Plants include Java Ferns, a Chain Sword, Micro Swords, Corkscrew Vals, Westeria, and a Madagascar Lace Plant (which has actually been growing for over a year and a half). As far as fish I have 9 bloodfin tetra, a peacock eel, four kuhli loaches, and a small cat who's species name I can not recall. Right now the tank is thick enough with greenery that you hardly notice the fish if you're not looking for them.

My saltwater setup is a 56 gallon corner tank. It's been cycling with damsels for about two months now. My plan is to get a nice looking Volitan and have it as a species tank. Still need to get decent lighting before I get some live rock. But it's still a work in progress.

Anyways, seems like a pretty cool board with lots of good information. I look forward to being a part of the community.

Hello and WELCOME!

Just about any light is ok for Live Rock. It's only if you're wanting corals that you need to have serious light considerations.

You'll hear this many times but we want PICTURES

When in doubt... wait it out. This means take it slow and let the tank "develop" and don't rush it. Time is your friend

Re: Hello from Las Vegas

Welcome Aboard Again - Corner tanks are always hard to light to get the spread however with a species tank if you are not thinking about corals it will be fairy easy for us to figure the best solution for you

Cool!

Right now the only light on it is a little 20W fluorescent that originally came with my freshwater tank. I would really like to set up a nice reef tank with live corals. But my cousin, whom I regularly turn to for fish care advice, recommended against it. Basically he told me that lionfish produce just a little too much waste to maintain the pristine water conditions most corals need. I was planning on getting a 2x65W Power Compact, just in case I ever decide that I just have to have some live corals. But if I'm just going to add live rock and no corals I may just get a single 65W. Either way your suggestions and recommendations will be much appreciated.
