Re: Hello from huntsville, tx

Welcome! How about bringing plastic fish in the tub with you and drying them off when you're done, they can sit on the shelf until your next bath. That's little maintenance!

All kidding aside, what do you mean by low maintenance? All pet endeavours require maintenance. Saltwater tanks are a maintenance heavy. Time to change your mindset my friend.

Hello welcome to RS... Go as big as you can. 30 gallon sounds good. Reason being, small tanks water parameters can change very quickly and need CONSTANT monitoring. Heat and salinity can change quick and be hard on livestock.

There are alot of very nice- outstanding nanos 12-24 gallons on the site here as well. Im sure they will jump in here soon

Welcome! Most, ok, all salt water tanks require a lot of care, but...they are oh so worth it!!!

What you have to think about with the nano is do you want corals and fish or just fish? They are much prettier with both and look more natural. You can get some of the easier corals that take little care and do well.

Welcome aboard!
Low maintenance is a slippery slope. How low do you want to go?

1. Bigger tank - slower changes in salinity, ph, nitrates etc.
2. Live Sand - Harbors beneficial bacteria to help clean your tank
3. Live Rock - Another harbor for benficial bacteria to help with filtration
4. Sumps and Refugiums - increase total water volume (see bigger tank above) and also give you a place to grow macro algaes to help with nutrient export and filtration.
5. Hire Jack to clean and maintain your tank. lol

I forgot item #0. Skimmer - (get one rated for bigger than your tank) helps remove biological waste from your tank and keeps your fish happy.

Let us know what you are going for and other things that you are looking for in your ultimate tank.

They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Kyle is a great guy, have had some on-line fun with him. You already have a great resource with him as a friend. I'd suggest getting a book on setting up a saltwater tank. Bob Fenner's, The Conscientious Marine Aquarist is a good start. From there you can decide what kind of tank you want and get some of the basics of equipment and species you want to keep.

Research will be your best friend and go a long way to helping you save money and headaches. Of course this forum will help you along the way.

Do you have an idea of the kind of fish you would like to have?

In a tank of that volumn, I'd suggest keeping the fish on the smaller side. The smaller the full grown size of the fish, the more you can have. Some that come to mind are:

Royal Gramma
Black Capped Basslet
Firefish
Pygmy angels
Yashia goby
Neon goby
Jawfish
Some Hawkfish

Re: Hello from huntsville, tx

Scott, have you been hitting the nitrous. You shouldn't tell him about your bath tub fish. Welcome to RS. Scott makes an excellent point (when he gets done messing with you). Lots of good advice so far just go slow and research thoroughly before you make a move. Think about small fish you would like to have but remember that from the time that you first set up your tank, it's going to be 6-8 weeks before you can add a fish.
