Hello peeps

Hi there I'm interested in starting a reef tank. At the moment I'm doing loads of research, good tank sizes, lighting, filters etc. I hope to finish my research soon and start my own reef. Love the site, it's very helpful. Take care all :-) P.S. I hope to be d.i.y.ing as much as possible (I like to tinker)

Re: Hello peeps

Hey armyben,

Welcome aboard. You've come to the right place.

Just a couple of notes for you. Here's several of the mistakes newbies make consistently.

1. Trusting your Local Fish Store (LFS) to give you good advice. Now, this may seem like the logical place to get advice but LFSs are notorious for NOT giving correct answers to your questions. Bring them to us. We have no ulterior motive but to help and there is plenty of experience here to draw upon.

2. The only thing that happens fast in a marine aquarium, fish only or reef, is disaster. Keep this idea in the forefront of your brain at all times.

3. Bigger is better when it comes to your first tank size. It's tempting to run out and get a 12, 16, 20, 26 gallon (Or whatever size) Nano tank but, they are not easier. They are more difficult for the beginner. Why? In a clam shell, water parameters can and will change much more rapidly in a small water volume than a larger one. Marine animals require not only good water conditions but stable water conditions. Refer back to point 2.

3. Research, research and research more about this most fascinating hobby. Then, before making a decision, run the idea through this forum. As a beginner, you don't have a clue what effect a seemingly minor decision like adding a chemical to your tank will do. There are many, literally useless, additives on the market that do nothing but transfer money from your wallet to the manufacturer's bank account. Ask questions here, first.

Well, that ought to get you started in the right direction.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: Hello peeps

Welcome to RS! I recommend getting the best lighting you can afford now because getting it later will be a HUGE pain.
