New to Forum..Any Ideas?

Hello, I am restarting a hobby the I have been out of for about 5 years. We unfortunately moved into a house too small to house any of my tanks as they were a 125g fish, and a 120 reef only tanks. I am in the process of setting up a new 29g reef tank. I am using a 10g sump with a DAS bx filter/skimmer and will be starting the tank off with a little live sand and about 15lbs of live rock in the tank. I know there are alot more new items on the market now than there were before, but wanted some opinions on this set up. Thank you.

Welcome to RS. What are you planning on keeping? You didn't talk lighting, and I think you should double up on the LR. Not real sure what you need to know, but Welcome Again!!

Re: New to Forum..Any Ideas?

I know I need more rock, but that was all the local supplier had at the time.As far as lights go..I would like look into the pwr compacts. I do still have my metal halide set, but the hood is like 5' long and way too much for the amount of space I have to work with.

Welcome to the Reef!!

How long is your tank?

What would you like to keep in your tank long term?

Live Rock Rubble will do the SAME thing as Bio-Balls and is NOT a suitable replacement for BIO-BALLS in a Reef System! It's ALL gotta go!!
Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Re: New to Forum..Any Ideas?

I would mainly like to do more soft corals I really like having the colonies of polyps and mushrooms too. The tank is a typical 30"x12"x18" 29 gal. It's a little smaller than what I was used to, but it has been quite a while since I've had a tank running, so I'm starting slow again. And yes!! used to play PB quite often, but the name came along with my stylish haircut...smooth.

I would canibalize the MH fixture to make a retrofit DIY hood. You've already got 'em, might as well use 'em.

Welcome to RS! Poop to all of the above, be a reefer knock a wall out lol, no, really work with what youve got, pick up a retro reflector and use the mh, a 29 is a nice "getting back into it" size, maybe add a ro/di unit to the shopping list. Steve

Thank you all for your input, Guess I'll stick with the MH. Now to figure out a filter since my pump went up in smoke when I plugged it in. Thanks again
