| Tunicate | Hello from Candler, NC My name is Keenan and I just wanted to say hello to all. I am just getting ready to get started in the SW reef hobby. I had a VERY basic SW fish only tank about 9 or so years ago, but other than that I am really new at this. Haven't even got my stand yet for the 55 gal SW I want to set up. I am on a budget and am going to have to work UP to a lot of things I will need, but any help getting started with the right setup would be greatly appreciated. Keenan |

| Elegance coral | Re: Hello from Candler, NC First off welcome to rs ,this is a very good forum filled with knoledgable pepole.remember their is no stupid question here.. well ure gonna need a skimmer. The bigger the better.prefly one rated for twice ure water volume. For coral you will need the proper lighting. This is an area u dont want to skimp on.pc's and vho's will work for soft coral and leathers.metal halides will let u keep a broad array of species. For filtration bio balls are ok to establish a tank, but become nitrate havens.stay away from cannister filters.they are ok for fo tanks, but also require maintnence for nitrates. i use a standered hang on for running carbon. baseically enough flow and established live rock will be ure biological filter.i would buy an extra tank that fits in ure stand.run an overflow into it and a pump back into the display. Here u put ure 4 inch sand bed.the benifical anerobic bacteria only live in the low oxegen end of the sand bed.they love trates.i also grow macro algea and mangroves as they use up nitrates also. so make sure u have enough live rock 1-2 pounds per gallon,a deep sand bed, excellent flow, and plenty of patience.remember ure trying to recreate what god created.only in a glass house .so patience is ure key

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: Hello from Candler, NC Welcome to RS! Best advice I can give is to go slowly and do a lot of research. You can end up losing a lot of livestock and wasting a lot of money by trying to go too quickly.
