I'm new to the site looking for help with my nano reef. I hope to learn quite a bit and eventually be able to help people as well.

Re: new

welcome, you will find lots of good knowledgeable people here. there is always someone around to chime in and answer your question or point you to somewhere you can get the info you need.

as always we expect updates on the comings and goings or your adventures and of course pics. starting a chronicle really helps you see how you and your tank grow, plus we love looking at all pic and comments along the way.

so what are your planning with the tank? fish, coral wise?

BTW, love your name . you made the first step, admitting it. the treatment--having your own little piece of the ocean

Re: new

Well I posted pics of my nano reef already in the nano reef section (it's not much but it's something).

We took on the fish and the sand and rock from my friend's existing tank and probably added the fish too early, 3 weeks after adding the live sand/rock. The ammonia and nitrites barely rose at all but the nitrates are at 40 and will not lower. That's my main problem right now.

This tank is hopefully just temporary we have an empty 55 gallon that we want to transfer the perc, neon goby and yellow watchman into in about 3-4 months but need to get all the right equipment.

Re: new

Have you done ANY water changes? Doing water changes will help to export the nitrates and replenish trace elements consumed or "Taken Up" from the tank. That should go a long way to help. I would do an immediate 20% and retest your water. Then post back and let's see where we stand.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Ask me about how to increase your REEF budget without going without FOOD!!

Yeah I usually do 2 one gallon water changes a week but just yesterday I did a 3 gallon. The levels might have gone done a hair bit but not very much.

Re: new

Hello welcome to RS. The nitrates should and will come down. it may take awhile. I have always had good luck with the bottled bacteria (stress zyme) from my lfs for a new tank. It may be called something different at your lfs. Any Bottled bacteria will help. Your system may be missing something as far as the bacteria area and needs a little push through.
