Re: Pwer Heads

That's a tough one! Really it dpends on what you have in the tank and what you're trying to accomplish. From my experience placement is more of a trial & error thing as opposed to a an exact "science" .

Wish I had more enlightening news for ya.

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Welcome to RS!
The answer will depend on a lot of things. What is the flow on the power heads? What do you keep or want to keep in your tank?

Re: Pwer Heads

also, as of now...do you have enough circulation BEHIND your LR? If not, then there is a use for one of them.....try and see...

Re: Pwer Heads

OK I am going to butt in here with a question. I have a 55 gal, a Maxi Jet 1200 on the right side about as high as it will go to produce some 'waves", I have a 900 about 1/3 down in the middle pointing to the right.

My question is why would I want circulation behind my LR? And should I move my 900 all the way to the left and lower to make it flow behind the LR?

Re: Pwer Heads

You want circulation throughout the water, for gas exchange....(crap, memory issue again), oxygen levels. Having one positioned behind your LR will also help keep the detritus from settling there and becoming a problem.I have my hoses coming off the bulkhead positioned so that one is behind the LR and the other positioned to hit the other side of the bulkhead. I have two powerheads positioned on either side of my tank so that there is flow going slightly across the top and the other positioned mid way down the tank. This will vary due to what you have where and what you want to do.

Re: Pwer Heads

Awesome explaination caitrina, my tank is a small nano, even in mine I have my out "y"ed off into 2, one goes to the front and surface of the tank, and the other to the back on my LR....it works wonders, No excess detrious, no excess nitrates!...make sense?
