| Tunicate | newbee I am new to RS. i have had freshwater tanks my whole life. I am now looking into a reef tank. I am thinking of a 46-50 gallon to start. Any advice on buying used tanks & equipment is appreciated. I would like to save some money if possible on the simple things so I can invest more on things like lighting and good specimens. | Brunt of all Jokes~ | Re: newbee Welcome to RS LIV! 50 gal is a nice starter tank, enough room to play and most equip is standard for size, used tanks can come with problems of their own, as its "holding" your investment take care in your purchase. Steve

| Tunicate | Re: newbee Thanks! sounds like good advice. I checked out Craig's list and found a few prospects. my brother in law has three reef tanks-so i decided to consult him before I purchase used. I think I have some more research to do before I start. I'm a data (research) junkie-maybe it's because i'm a teacher-I don't know. Anyway thanks again any info is greatly helpful! LIV ![]() |

| Sunshine Reefer ![]() | Re: newbee Welcome to RS! Glad you joined in. At this point the best thing you can do is research and lots of it. I only wish I had done the same. So many of my mistakes (many of them expensive) could have been avoided if I had done research BEFORE I got my tank. At least now I have started researching and am still learning. It never stops.

| Excellent Guesser :D | Re: newbee I don't believe there is such a thing as a research junkie. Impulse junkie maybe. Welcome aboard the board! I started with a 30 used from a friend and bought a 55 used off craigs list (thanks craig). What sold me was the 1/5 chiller and the Metal Halide light hood. All the other equipment was a bonus at that point. $300! Now that it is full and growing, I want a 75+ for more room to grow. Learn from my mistakes! Say no to 55! lol

| Sea Pen | Re: newbee WELCOME TO THE SANCTUARY! the place for reef geeks. as far as the tank goes, i agree, don't get the 55, if you want to start at arounf that size, i would go with the 40 breeder. it's wider than than 55 and aquascaping a 55 is a PITA in my opinion. that's what i started and after 2 months unpgraded to a 120. GOOD LUCK!
