Meet and Greet

Hi...my name is Grannyf (Joan)...I am a 69 year old retired person loving every minute!!!!! Some of my family think I am nuts cause I now have a 30gallon freshwater. a 75 gallon freshwater, a 2 1/2 gallon freshwater (baby tank), a 1 gallon home for my Beta, and last but not least my new 14 gallon Oceanic Bio-Cube Saltwater tank. It has been up and running now for 6 weeks and I have in it: a 6 line wrasse; a "Nemo"; a yellow watachman goby; a Peppermint Shrimp; a Camel Shrimp; a red flame scallop; a feather duster that is not "dusting"...showing its self; and a serpent starfish that lives under the big life rock; also the clean up crew of snails and crabs. I found out after I put the shrimp in the tank that they will eat the yellow polyps I had...so took the polys back....now I am wondering what kind of coral I can have with these shrimp??????????????? and, what else can I add to my itty bitty tank! I am also finding out that perhaps I do not need all this stuff they sold me...like the Nano Reef Part A and part B stuff they say add every day....and like the buffer to add when doing a water change!!!!!!!!
As you can see....I need alll the help I can get before I spend anymore money!!!!

Re: Meet and Greet

Welcome aboard Joan!
From what I've heard and read the camel shrimp might be a good candidate to be returned. I've heard they can be a little aggresive on their scavenging.
Not so sure about the scallop in that small of tank, but some more people will chime in as soon as they've had their first cup of coffee.

*** Alot of people use the guideline of 1" of fish per 5 gallons of water so you would be pushing the limits on your 14 gallon. The corals are a little more in the grey area.

When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Re: Meet and Greet

Joan! Welcome to the Sanctuary! We think you are fabulous with all those tanks regardless of what your family says about you!
My suggestion would be to get rid (trade in) the Camel Back shrimp. They are reported to be not reef safe and will eat your soft corals (polyps, mushrooms etc). Some people have reported that peppermint shrimps also have eaten corals, but I haven't seen it in my experience and they are reported to be reef safe. With that being said, there are prettier shrimps like the Fire shrimp and skunk cleaner shrimp that you may like more than the peppermint. Good, hardy starter corals are zoanthids (zoas) and mushrooms. Best of luck to you!

Welcome to RS!
Be careful on stocking level in that small of a tank. You are going to need to do frequent water changes to keep the paramaters in line for corals. Run your tests frequently and do a water change as soon as you see any nitrates.
Post some pics when you can. We love pics.

Re: Meet and Greet

I'm with everyone else that you are about the limit for fish in the tank and to be careful with the water quality, as for the corals, the kind you can keep depend on the lighting in the tank and the water quality. The A and B supplement you are refering to sounds like C balance to me. C balance is for maintaining proper calcium and alkalinity (very important for corals), did they give you test kits, and if so which ones? Testing is very important in reef aquaria and you need to "know your water".

Re: Meet and Greet

Hello Joan, Welcome to RS.. Just a few words of encouragement "always be careful when you at a petstore and they say buy this and buy this and buy this" They are only in it for the $. I would not add any treatments to the tank.. The best thing to do is water changes. Alot of salt mixes have what you need to keep the tank healthy.. In a tank that small keeping all water reading,(salinity, temp, ammonia, nitrates, and nitrates) where they should be is gonna be key.

Feel free to ask question on here before making a purchase and we will help you.
