Howdee

My name is Kevin..Retired from US Navy in 1995..had a 150 gallon tank that had all three forms of fish only in it..yes it did happen started as a fresh water tank..then gradually became a brackish water tank and finally a low SG saltwater tank that contained fancy Oranga Goldfish, 2 Oscars, a few Cichlids an anenome 2 clowns and for a very short time a lionfish all living peacefully in the same tank. I also put 2 male Betas in there and all was good til they found each other and it was all over they both fought and died before I could get to them...yeh, that fast. I was across the room and saw some rapid movement from the corner of my eye and by the time i got to the tank they had mortally wounded each other.. It was an experiment conducted by myself and an Aquarium Store owner. This is possible but takes a lot of patience and time. Definately for only the hardiest of fish..When we moved from Va. to Ga I felt it was wise to leave it all in his hands as the move from Fla. to Va. was brutal on some of the fish. That move was prior to the hybrid setup in Va. where this experiment ocurred so I knew it was a bad idea to expect anything good from moving that tank if I had any care for the fish living so I left it all behind. NOW I am getting into the hobby again only no hybrid this time,,LOL it was fun though. I am getting a 250 gal tank to set up a reef and a few fish. I plan on using the Jaubert Plenim System with live sand and Live Rock only..no skimmer no sumps,,,nothing. I will have 2 heaters, 4 Tunze Powerheads running off a Tunze wave controller..MH, Blue Actinic and Blacklight (night only). and thats about it. I was curious if anyone has the approx water flow I need to create the high current flow for appropriate corals (SPS, LPS and such), without creating a sandstorm..any thoughts??? I am thinking about 1850 GPH but that seems like a lot especially since the Jaubert System needs low flow under the grid. Any advice??
I will also entertain any questions on the hybrid tank as to this day many think it is impossible to have freshwater, brackishwater and saltwater fish in the same tank at the same time...bring it.

Thanks
Big Kev

Nitrate (NO3) reduction is directly proportional to percentage of Water Change.
Allen's home-made formula...(-NO3=WC%)
This means if you change 50% of your total water volume (That's EVERYTHING) you'll get a net reduction of (NO3) somewhere around 50%.

Welcome to RS! Glad you could join us. Sound like you like to think outside the box. Should make for an interresting setup. Post some pics when you can. Specially of the hybrid system. That would be neat to see.

What? How can you have fish and birds in the same tank? For that matter why would you have birds in a tank at all? I am very very confused.

Re: Howdee

I see I have come to the right place..I see crazy people...cool...Can't send pics of the hybrid tank as it was left behind in Va. in 1995 when I retired from the Navy and moved to Ga. I don't plan on trying that again as it was a huge effort to have just the right water conditions. Even though they all were surviving, none of them, except the brackishwater fish, were thriving. It was a huge benefit in learning how water properties effect fish.
I am still in the research and planning stages (That means the wife won't come off the cash yet) for my reef tank...did some stuff last night and settled on the final fish line-up of Clowns, Gobies, Rabbitfish, Damsels, and Tangs...all seem to be a good combo for a friendly cohabitating reef...since it will contain an assortment of snails, shrimp, stars, and clams amongst many corals....Hey I got a Q...How would a couple Cleaner Wrasse be in this..I would love to watch them set up a "FISH WASH"...little neon signs..free fin rotations, wax on wax off...LOL

Re: Howdee

Cleaner wrasses are very hard to keep alive. Most of them will not eat prepared foods and slowly die. I would get fire shrimp or a neon dottyback. They are both cleaners as well and are much easier to keep long term.
